Powerpuff Girls LiveAction Show Moving Forward At The CW

The CW has given a pilot order for The Powerpuff Girls live-action TV series. Created by Craig McCracken, the original animated series ran for six successful seasons between 1998 to 2005 on Cartoon Network. The series followed Blossom, Buttercup and Bubbles, three pint-sized superheroes created by their scientist father who fight crime and protect their fictional city of Townsville. The Powerpuff Girls was a pop culture phenomenon, appealing to both children and adults and giving 90’s kids some of their first examples of female empowerment.

The Powerpuff Girls got its first reboot in 2016, featuring the same plot as the original with a new voice cast and changes in animation style. The reboot aired on Cartoon Network, but was not as successful with critics as the original and faced several controversies, including the addition of a fourth, Black Powerpuff Girl, who many felt was an offensive stereotype. A new live-action reboot was first announced back in August 2020. Based on the original series, the reboot was reported to follow the three girls now in their twenties and retired from their work as child superheroes but must reunite to save the world from evil.

Now The Powerpuff Girls live-action reboot has been picked up by The CW. The network has given a pilot order for the series, which follows the three heroes who are now “disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting.” The three will be challenged to come out of retirement together to save the world. The show hails from writers and executive producers Heather Regnier (Veronica Mars) and Diablo Cody (Juno), with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Madden executive producing via Berlanti Productions. Warner Bros. Television will also produce.

The Powerpuff Girls is one of three pilots ordered by The CW, with all of them created by women and centered around young women. Along with The Powerpuff Girls, the network has greenlit Naomi, a series adaptation of the DC comic of the same name from Ava DuVernay and Jill Blankenship, and an untitled religious dramedy about two millennial nuns. The CW also announced a straight-to-series order for a reboot of the USA Network series The 4400, which has been in development since 2018.

The CW is not new to adapting childhood content into young adult shows, following its dramatic take on The Archies with Riverdale (which was recently renewed by The CW for a sixth season). While Riverdale is infamous for its often cringey dialogue and outlandish storylines, it has an undeniably strong fan base, and it’s possible that The Powerpuff Girls could attract long-time fans and a new generation of viewers.
