Red Hoods Allegiances Are All Over The Place In Gothams Future

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Future State: Gotham #2

In DC Comics’ new Future State: Gotham series, the adventures of Jason Todd’s Red Hood continue, snd his loyalties and allegiances are all over the place in the future. While the Magistrate has an iron grip over Gotham and the Bat-Family leads a resistance against them, Jason Todd is found in the middle of everything, working for the original Batman, whom everyone thinks is dead, while also seeking to bring in the New Batman to face justice. However, the latest issue sees Jason as a victim of circumstance, being forced to ally himself with opposing forces in order to survive.

In the Red Hood backup stories featured during DC’s Future State event from Joshua Williamson, Dennis Culver, and Giannis Milonogiannis, Jason Todd is depicted having a career as a bounty hunter, tracking down vigilantes and mask-wearers for the Magistrate. It certainly seemed as though Jason had betrayed his Bat-Family after the alleged death of the original Batman, and as a result, it was revealed that he’s no longer allowed to operate on Gotham’s rooftops. Even so, the stories also saw him working with an agent in the shadows, confirming that Red Hood was working undercover as a double agent against the Magistrate.

Now, Future State: Gotham continues Red Hood’s story, seeing him dead set on bringing the New Batman in as all evidence points to him having blown up an entire section of the city. Despite his secret work against the Magistrate, Jason actually accepts their promotion and is given the title Peacekeeper Red, allowing him greater freedom with more resources. However, going after the New Batman has certainly put him even more at odds with his estranged Bat-Family, and they make sure to let him know it in Future State: Gotham #2. While he’d like nothing more than to share his true mission with Nightwing and the others, he was instructed to keep them in the dark for their safety. However, the cost is being seen as a traitor when he’d like nothing more than to work and fight alongside them.

Furthermore, the issue also confirms that Jason is indeed working for Bruce Wayne, who’s chosen to stay “dead” and anonymous until the Magistrate has been taken down. Not only that, but despite Jason wanting to arrest the New Batman Tim Fox, he ends up being forced to fight alongside him when a mass jailbreak occurs at Blackgate Penitentiary.

In the end, it appears as though Red Hood is working with Bruce Wayne to take on the Magistrate, while also wanting to arrest the New Batman. Complicating things further, Red Hood is also working for the Magistrate he’s secretly working against while fighting the Bat-Family he’s secretly trying to help. It’s actually pretty impressive to see just how important Jason has become in Gotham’s future, as evidenced by all of these people needing his help and/or wanting to fight him (which seemingly varies from moment to moment).

In any case, it looks as though things are only going to get more intense for Jason Todd as Future State: Gotham continues. As much as he wants to arrest the New Batman, Jason is going to need Tim Fox’s help in the upcoming issues now that they’re both caught in a sea of prisoners freed from their cells. Hopefully, fighting alongside the New Batman will allow the Red Hood to take a beat and get an explanation from Tim about the destruction to the city, as it’s more than likely that he’s being used and framed for the terrible act.
