Rick and Morty Main Characters Ranked By Likability

Rick Sanchez and his grandson Morty Smith embark on several adventures in Rick and Morty. Sometimes they bring their family with them. The Smith family helps or hinders Rick’s plans, and along the way, their personalities come out.

The main characters in Rick and Morty show their likability through their attitudes and actions. Personalities like Summer Smith are easy to like from their debut, while others like Rick prove to be unpleasant after long plot arcs. Some of the best characters in Rick and Morty are the most likable. Their actions make them more pleasant than others.

Rick Sanchez

Rick is a brilliant scientist. He seems to be able to solve any problem put in his way, something he continually reminds his grandson Morty of. Rick’s power is elaborated on as the series continues. In the later seasons of the series, his abilities are increasingly referred to as God-like, and there seems to be almost nothing Rick can’t do. However, Rick has a plethora of negative qualities.

He is self-centered, narcissistic, and unempathetic toward the pain of others. He shows warmth on a few occasions mostly toward his family, and usually only to his daughter Beth and granddaughter Summer. Rick seems to take pleasure in manipulating Morty when teaching him lessons on their adventures, like when he creates Morty’s place-saving device in “The Vat of Acid Episode.” Rick may be smart, but his likable qualities are hard to find.

Jessica

Jessica is Morty’s crush from school. She isn’t as developed a character as the members of the Smith family, but she appears consistently throughout the series. She’s presented as a popular girl at her and Morty’s school, and he fawns after her any time he works up the courage to speak with her. However, Jessica isn’t very affable.

Most of the time, she ignores Morty and seems to be a superficial person, even though some fans think Jessica is a good match for Morty. Part of the humor in Morty’s infatuation with Jessica is he projects a personality onto her. Audiences don’t learn Jessica’s interests or qualities that would lead Morty to like her. Sometimes she gives Morty a chance, like in “Rest and Ricklaxation.” However, most of the time she ignores him and seems self-centered and rude.

Jerry Smith

Jerry is Morty’s dad and Rick’s son-in-law. He gives Rick and Morty some of its funniest quotations. Jerry appears to be well-intentioned, but his actions usually get in the way of Rick’s plans. Jerry is pleasant, contrasting Rick’s brash and abrasive attitude. However, Jerry proves to be less likable than his peers thanks to his incompetence. Fans may pity Jerry, as he doesn’t seem to be very good at anything.

His inability to excel is perhaps best underscored in “Meeseeks and Destroy.” In the episode, helper entities called “Meeseeks” are summoned to help Jerry with his golfing game. The Meeseeks are designed to help finish any task easily, but Jerry is so inept that they are unable to help him, causing them to respawn repeatedly. He is indignant when others point out his failures or try to help. Jerry seems hopeless, and others around him suffer for it.

Morty Smith

Morty is one of the protagonists in Rick and Morty, and one of the most richly developed characters. Morty is pleasant by nature. He often acts as a moral balance to Rick’s nihilism and seems to genuinely care for the well-being of others. However, Morty is not without poor qualities.

Morty often acts in self-interest. His boyish desires cloud his better judgment, and he hurts others when he serves himself. In “Rick Potion #9,” he uses a love potion to try and win Jessica’s affection, which ends in the destruction and pain of many. Furthermore, Morty plans to chemically manipulate Jessica’s feelings against her will. If Morty didn’t let his selfishness impact others, he’d be more likable.

Beth Smith

Beth is Morty’s mother and Rick’s daughter. Beth has some unlikable qualities, like her need to be in charge. In “Pickle Rick,” Beth recognizes Rick needs help after he’s transformed into a pickle. However, she prolongs his situation after Rick challenges her.

Despite her faults, however, Beth is one of the most likable members of the Smith family. She cares about others, and fans often see this in her love for her children. Furthermore, she is a veterinarian and has dedicated her life to helping animals, specifically horses, who can’t help themselves. Beth’s kindness is presented multiple times throughout the series.

Summer Smith

Summer is perhaps the most likable member of the Smith family. She is funny, and her wise-cracking often makes for some of Rick and Morty’s best quotes. She shows her humanity in her poor qualities, like her superficiality and jealousy of Rick and Morty’s adventures. Furthermore, her relationship with her father Jerry can lead her to act cruelly to him in moments. However, her positive behavior overshadows the negative.

Summer is quick on her feet and often gets her family out of trouble in their adventures. In “Raising Gazorpazorp,” she figures out a way to save Rick and herself when they are on a faraway planet. She is sometimes the only family member who tries to protect Rick after his misadventures harm the rest of the family.

Birdperson

Birdperson is Rick’s old friend. He isn’t as developed as the members of the Smith family but appears regularly throughout the series. Birdperson is stoic and speaks in a monotone voice, which allows for moments of humor when placed against Rick’s disastrous and wacky situations.

Birdperson is one of the more likable recurring characters in Rick and Morty. It is implied that he acts as almost a superhero, and he usually only appears to help others. In “Ricksy Business,” he shows up at Rick’s party only after believing someone needed rescue at the location. Birdperson’s altruism makes him one of the show’s most likable characters.
