Smallville Season 7 Made Lionel Not Knowing Clarks Secret A Plot Hole

A big retcon in Smallville season 7 made it difficult to understand why Lionel Luthor (John Glover) didn’t know from the beginning that Clark Ken (Tom Welling) was Superman, or just that he was an alien from another planet. For years, Clark had to keep his powers and Kryptonian heritage a secret from a number of characters, including Lana (Kristin Kreuk), Chloe (Allison Mack), Lex (Michael Rosenbaum), and more, but it was arguably Lionel who should have figured out the truth first.

Lionel’s suspicions of Clark began in season 2 when Clark (under the influence of red Kryptonite) fired a bullet into his own hand in the Luther Mansion. Lionel was blind at the time and didn’t see him do it, but he did find the crushed bullet on the floor. After that, Lionel remained curious about Clark’s true nature, and even blackmailed Chloe into keeping tabs on him. In season 4, he switched bodies with Clark and gained access to all his super powers, but forgot this incident after the two reverted back to normal. As close as he came to uncovering the truth, he didn’t know for sure that Clark was a Kryptonian until he formed a connection to Jor-El, who left many of his memories in Lionel’s mind when he entered his body in the season 4 finale.

A major reveal in Smallville season 7 made Lionel’s failure to decipher Clark’s secret a bigger issue than it once was. Apparently, Lionel was a member of a group called Veritas that somehow had knowledge about a being called “The Traveler”. Veritas knew this “Traveler” was an alien from a distant planet that would land on Earth. They were also aware that this person arrived during the 1989 meteor shower. What this means is that Lionel knew more about what was really going in Smallville than any of the other main characters, yet for some reason, he never connected the dots.

Lionel possessing this knowledge prior to season 1 and not realizing that the Traveler was Clark is complicated by an episode in season 2 that revealed Lionel Luthor secretly arranged Clark’s illegal adoption for the Kents. They needed this from Lionel because they had no real proof that they had adopted him. The request to handle an under-the-table adoption that lined up with the timing of the meteor shower should have tipped him off immediately, but it didn’t. A second retcon in season 8, this one coming in the form of Lionel’s journal, offered another confusing twist. Tess (Cassidy Freeman) read the journal and claimed the adoption did indeed make Lionel think Clark might be the Traveler. This contrasted with details from past seasons, and the fact that Lionel didn’t try to take Clark and perform experiments on him like he did with Davis Bloome, who he also thought was the Traveler.

If the adoption wasn’t enough to provide the proof he needed, the mysterious nature of Clark’s activities after becoming a teenager should have done much more than just pique his interest. It’s at least possible that Lionel briefly wondered if Clark could be the Traveler in season 3, as indicated by the scene where he asked Chloe to use her temporary truth powers to ask the Kents about where he came from. But for the most part, it seems Lionel didn’t really know what to make of Clark. That’s not too different from how Lana and Lex perceived Clark in Smallville, but because of the Veritas retcon, Lionel should have arrived at the truth must faster and easier than they did.
