NBC’s Saturday Night Live almost needs no introduction. Since its inception the sketch comedy show has produced some of the funniest moments in television history and continues to thrill to this day.

Many fans agree that the early days of SNL had some of the strongest episodes of the entire series as well as the most memorable cast members. The first ten seasons of the show saw the groundwork laid for the future, as many of the tropes of the show were established in the series’ first decade.

10 Season 1: Richard Pryor/Gil Scott-Heron

Just a few weeks into their historic run, SNL featured comedy legend Richard Pryor as the host. Pryor was a perfect choice and he brought his trademark brand of comedy to his hilarious monologue. Pryor had also done work as an actor and was able to keep up well with the cast during the sketches he was in.

Pryor and Chevy Chase worked well together and starred alongside one another in a hilarious sketch that revolved around a job interview and a word association game. Pryor was the perfect star to give the fledgeling show a boost.

9 Season 2: Candice Bergen/Frank Zappa

Many of the hosts in the first few seasons of SNL returned frequently and Candice Bergen had already done the job twice before. Bergen shines with the cast and plays off of them well because of the familiarity. Most of the cast from the first season returned for the second and they really began to pick up steam with hosts.

The episode is anchored by great character work from cast members like Dan Aykroyd who brushed off his Jimmy Carter impression for the upcoming election. The episode is also particularly strong because of a spirited musical performance from Frank Zappa who would also later host.

8 Season 3: Steve Martin/The Blues Brothers

By the third season of the show, Steve Martin had already hosted several times and proved he was one of the best hosts SNL ever had. The episode really hits its stride as Martin practically blends in with the main cast as if he had been there all along, and he is hilarious.

The appearance of the Festrunk brothers sketch is a particularly hilarious highlight as Martin and Aykroyd embody the characters to perfection. On top of that, the musical performance by the Blues Brothers showed they were more than a simple comedy act and could actually perform well.

7 Season 4: Carrie Fisher/The Blues Brothers

Carrie Fisher hosts and shows that she can not only act in films but keep up with sketch comics as well. SNL has never shied away from topical jokes and the episode is absolutely stuffed with modern references for 1978.

A lot of the show’s jokes revolve around Star Wars and several of the sketches parody the hit film to perfection. Fisher is a good sport and reprises the role of Princess Leia for a hilarious sketch. Also, the Blues Brothers make another musical appearance and tear the house down with their renditions of Blues and R & B staples.

6 Season 5: Steve Martin/Paul & Linda McCartney

The second to last episode of the fifth season was a star studded affair. Steve Martin returns to host for his eighth time and he doesn’t miss a beat. Though he had become an international superstar since his first appearance, Martin’s performances on SNL remained strong and consistent.

The episode is held together by Martin’s incredible hosting ability as well as a particularly funny sketch featuring Father Guido Sarducci. In the sketch, Sarducci tries to interview Paul McCartney but gets the times mixed up to hilarious results. Also, the performance from Paul and Linda McCartney was a musical highlight for the entire season.

5 Season 6: Bill Murray/Delbert McClinton

The early days of SNL weren’t without their hardships. By the sixth season, the entire cast had changed since the first season and ratings were seeing a serious decline. Overall the quality of the show dipped but a returning Bill Murray gave the show a much needed boost.

Murray’s charisma hadn’t waned since he left the show and he lights up the screen every time he appears in a sketch. The funniest thing about the episode, besides Murray, is the fact that they never shy away from self deprecating humor. The opening sketch sees the entire cast being consoled by Murray who assures them that ratings aren’t that important.

4 Season 7: Johnny Cash/Elton John

Some episodes are propelled by star power alone, especially when the show isn’t particularly good. SNL had continued to lose steam by season seven and things were looking bleak for the sketch show overall. Fortunately, Johnny Cash arrives to deliver a great episode with his genuine humor and folksy charm.

The country music icon had hosted his own variety show in the past and showed he could keep up with the sketch performers admirably. In a hilarious sketch, Johnny Cash saves a man from execution by singing a rendition of “99,000 Bottles of Beer”. The episode works because the writers were able to incorporate elements of Cash’s personality into the sketches and didn’t try to force him to do too much.

3 Season 8: Chevy Chase/Queen

Chevy Chase was the first cast member to depart SNL to star in movies, but he had frequently returned to host. The opening episode of season eight was a star studded affair and was the perfect way to kick off the new season. Chase brings his usual quality performance and the musical guest, Queen, rounded out a big debut episode.

One particularly funny moment came when Chase appeared on a TV screen to tell the audience that he would have to host the show from California due to a missed flight. Hilariously, it is accidentally revealed that Chase is actually in the studio and he begins his monologue. Overall, the show began to see an uptick in quality as the young cast became more confident.

2 Season 9: Don Rickles/Billy Idol

The ninth season of SNL was another low point for the series. Frequent cast turnover saw a lot of the quality of the earlier seasons slip away, especially without producer Lorne Michaels at the helm. Fortunately, roast comic Don Rickles arrives to host and does a lot to elevate the material.

The episode is powered by Rickles’ grumpy charisma and a stellar musical performance by Billy Idol. Idol was one of the hottest acts in music at the time and certainly gave the show a boost. Rickles’ monologue was a humorous highlight where he is able to exercise his razor sharp wit.

1 Season 10: George Carlin/Frankie Goes To Hollywood

As SNL limped to the end of its first decade, the show’s very first host returned to breath life into the ailing series. George Carlin was not only a stand-up comedy legend, but was also able to flex his muscles as a sketch comedian as well.

Carlin is charismatic enough to support a somewhat forgettable cast, and he performs with his own observational style. One particularly funny sketch sees Carlin working in a joke shop during the ancient days of feudal England and he carries the sketch with his usual flair.
