The Mandalorian How Beskar Is Strong Enough To Stop Lightsabers

The Mandalorian’s beskar has now been shown to be resistant to lightsabers, which begs the question of how strong they are – and, more importantly, why lightsabers can’t cut through beskar. Ever since the series premiere, The Mandalorian has been trying to reimplement Mandalorian culture into the mainstream, giving Disney+ viewers a taste of what Star Wars fans have known through the Expanded Universe for decades. And part of that meant highlighting beskar as one of the core elements of Mandalore and the Mandalorian people.

There was an importance placed on beskar in The Mandalorian season 1, with characters like Paz Vizsla and The Client noting that the Empire stripped Mandalore of its beskar during the Great Purge. Now many people offer beskar to Din Djarin as payment, giving the steel back to its rightful owners. Beskar is, after all, a fundamental component of what makes someone a Mandalorian, beyond just wearing armor that looks like one a Mandalorian would wear. As it turns out, there’s a reason why Mandalorians see beskar as part of their heritage, beyond it coming from Mandalore and its moon, Concordia.

In The Mandalorian season 2, episode 5, “The Jedi”, Ahsoka Tano surprise attacks Din Djarin, who uses his beskar armor (including his bracers) to block her lightsabers. Then later in the episode, Magistrate Morgan Elsbeth uses a spear made of pure beskar to duel Ahsoka. All of this raised the question of how beskar could withstand lightsabers, when lightsabers could cut through practically everything else. Though it’s never been quantified in canon or Legends, beskar is presumed to have a higher melting point than the heat lightsabers produce. This is one of many reasons Mandalorian armorers are exceptional craftsmen, since they use ancient techniques to smelt and mold beskar, which are difficult to replicate. Furthermore, they tend to layer the beskar, which makes the armor (or spear) more durable.

The fact that lightsabers can’t cut through beskar isn’t new in Star Wars, even if it is surprising to see on-screen. In Legends, the Sith Lord Exar Kun once tried to break into Freedon Nadd’s tomb, which was built out of beskar. Much to Exar Kun’s shock, he couldn’t penetrate the surface with his lightsaber, as told in the old comic series Tales of the Jedi. In canon, though, the reason people haven’t seen lightsabers be blocked by beskar is perhaps because not all Mandalorians wear beskar; many of them still wear durasteel, since beskar is rare.

All of this explains why ancient Mandalorians fought with beskar weapons, which makes sense why they were considered the enemy of the Jedi. Throughout the galaxy, only the Mandalorians could oppose the Jedi (before the time of the Sith), and the Jedi were the only people who could oppose the Mandalorians. Furthermore, beskar is the culmination of what makes durasteel special – including being able to withstand heat and freezing temperatures – and takes the next step.
