SpongeBob SquarePants 10 Potential Friendships We Would Have Loved To See (That Never Happened)

Since the late 1990s, SpongeBob SquarePants has tried to answer all the big questions about life. Ultimately, the only answer it’s provided so far has be that its SpongeBob who lives in a pineapple under the sea. But it has given viewers hundreds of adventures shared by dozens of friends.

Despite being on the air for so long, some characters have never really been depicted as friends. While most primary and secondary characters have interacted, calling them all friends would be an overstatement. It’s actually kind of a shame as these relationships could have led to some fun ongoing stories between unexpected partners.

10 Eugene Krabs And Mermaid Man

As owner of the Krusty Krab, Eugene Krabs holds a place of some influence in the community of Bikini Bottom. It is the foremost fast food restaurant in town, due in no small part to the iconic Krabby Patty that is prepared by SpongeBob SquarePants.

Mermaid Man, a hero based out of Bikini Bottom, is also well respected. Since the two of them are very irritable old men, who often complain about the littlest things, it would have been quite funny to see them squabble. Also, Mermaid Man might be able to help Krabs out with his Plankton problem.

9 Mrs. Puff And Karen

Mrs. Puff must have done something terrible in a past life to have ended up as SpongeBob’s driving instructor. She’s like Sisyphus, pushing a rock up a hill in Hades for eternity. Mrs. Puff’s rock is trying to teach SpongeBob how to drive.

Karen is in a similar situation with Plankton. She ends up constantly helping him try to defeat Mr. Krabs, knowing he will fail completely every time. Mrs. Puff and Karen need to start some kind of support group.

8 Sheldon J. Plankton And Squidward Tentacles

The only person who hates the Krusty Krab more than Squidward is Plankton. He has spent years of his tiny, tiny life trying to steal the secret formula from the Krabby Patty, only to fail miserably.

Squidward isn’t really a fan of the Krusty Krab and he outright hates SpongeBob. It’s a wonder he never picked up a permanent post at the Chum Bucket. There’s never anyone there to bother him while he’s napping, and he could spend the day complaining with Plankton.

7 The Flying Dutchman And King Neptune

As odd as this sounds, Bikini Bottom actually has a king who rules over it and presumably the rest of the oceans. His name is King Neptune. While he rarely shows up, it’s a big deal when he does.

But there’s also The Flying Dutchman floating around, an evil spirit who torments those same oceans. King Neptune and The Flying Dutchman actually have a lot in common, and would probably have some fun adventures together.

6 Mrs. Puff And Sheldon J. Plankton

Keeping in mind that Mrs. Puff and Karen would make interesting friends, she would probably be equally good friends with Plankton. While he hates Mr. Krabs the most, he’s no fan of SpongeBob’s, either.

Honestly, Mrs. Puff, Karen, and Plankton could form their own team to take down the Krusty Krab together. If nothing else, maybe Karen and Plankton can help Mrs. Puff figure out how to finally teach SpongeBob how to drive.

5 Larry The Lobster And Eugene Krabs

Since Bikini Bottom is a community under the sea, it’s kind of surprising that there aren’t more regular crustacean characters. Larry the Lobster and Mr. Krabs are the only ones who seem to show up with any frequency.

Realistically, Larry and Eugene don’t have much in common. Larry is fitness obsessed while Mr. Krabs sells fast food. Plus, one’s a lobster and the other is a crab. Still, they could probably use each other’s support in a town full of fish.

4 Karen And Sandy Cheeks

In a town filled with oddballs, Sandy Cheeks really stands out. That’s because she’s a squirrel from Texas who lives in a tree dome on the bottom of the ocean. But she also might be the smartest character in the series.

Being that Karen is a sentient computer, she and Sandy would make an interesting duo. If nothing else, Sandy might be able to explain how Karen actually manages to function underwater without completely shorting out.

3 Pearl Krabs And Patrick Star

One of the more confusing aspects of the series is Mr. Krabs being Pearl’s father. It’s not that Eugene couldn’t be her father, rather that the series hasn’t delved as deep into the backstory on the situation as it should have.

Oddly enough, she and Patrick would actually make good friends. Pearl needs someone in her life she can confide in. Patrick is a great listener but he won’t remember a single word she says. Plus, more scenes showing their love for SpongeBob and dancing would cement this bond forever.

2 Squidward Tentacles And Sandy Cheeks

Out of all the characters on the series, Squidward is easily the grumpiest out of all of them. He’s disagreeable and arrogant, and is constantly tripping over his own ego. Frankly, he needs someone to help bring him down to reality.

That individual could be Sandy. Both Squidward and Sandy are highly intelligent, though they handle that intelligence incredibly differently. Sandy would be a good influence on Squidward, and maybe make him a lot more likable.

1 SpongeBob SquarePants And Sheldon J. Plankton

The series has danced around this friendship on a few occasions, though it’s usually Plankton who isn’t willing to fully commit. Normally, he’s just using SpongeBob to get closer to the Krabby Patty secret formula.

Despite all of that, SpongeBob is still willing to give Plankton a chance and see the good in him. Honestly, if Plankton would just follow SpongeBob’s lead, he would have a much happier life.
