10 Saddest: Il-Nam Helps His Friend Live

Squid Game 5 Saddest Deaths (& 5 That Werent)

Il-Nam and Gi-Hun strike up a friendship almost immediately after entering the game. Il-Nam reveals that he has a brain tumor and knows he doesn’t have much time left. Perhaps this admission garners him sympathy from Gi-Hun.

Because of his age, Il-Nam is not anyone’s first pick as a game partner, but Gi-Hun always chooses him. In the marble game, that friendship pays off when Il-Nam willingly gives Gi-Hun his last marble so he can win the game. It’s a very sad moment watching Gi-Hun walk away knowing his friend is about to die.

9 Not Sad: The Religious Guy Who Is Always Praying

Squid Game 5 Saddest Deaths (& 5 That Werent)

Player 244, or “the religious guy,” is a side character that viewers aren’t introduced to until game 3, the Tug of War scene. He immediately annoys Ji-Yeong’s character with his prayer and spouting of religious beliefs.

During the Stepping Stones game, the religious guy drops to his knees and begins to pray, stalling the game. As the clock ticks down, the players get desperate, with one of them pushing him to his death. Needless to say, his character is not missed.

8 Saddest: Ji-Yeong Made Sure Sae-Byeok Won

Squid Game 5 Saddest Deaths (& 5 That Werent)

Before the players know what the 4th game will be, they are told to pick a partner. Because they are women and considered to be weak, no one chooses Ji-Yeong or Sae-Byeok. The two pair up together and Ji-Yeong tells Sae-Byeok she will make sure she wins.

Instead of jumping right into the game, Ji-Yeong and Sae-Byeok talk about their lives with one another. When it’s finally time to play the game, Ji-Yeong drops her marble on her turn, letting Sae-Byeok win. She tells her the person who has a life waiting for them after the game should be the one to get out. Ji-Yeong’s death is arguably the saddest of the entire show.

7 Not Sad: Deok-Su Got What He Deserved

Squid Game 5 Saddest Deaths (& 5 That Werent)

From the beginning, Deok-Su stands out as the villain among the players. He murders a player early on in the game, and after seeing what he was capable of, he rules his team with fear. One person who is not afraid of him, however, is Mi-Nyeo.

For a time, the two are teammates, but when Deok-Su betrays her, Mi-Nyeo promises to kill him. In the 5th game, Mi-Nyeo makes good on her promise and takes Deok-Su out with herself on the glass bridge.

6 Saddest: Sae-Byeok Is Killed By Sang-Woo

Squid Game 5 Saddest Deaths (& 5 That Werent)

Sae-Byeok is a character everyone wants to see succeed. After hearing her backstory, and realizing she needs the money to reunite her family, viewers cheer her on in hopes of her making it to the end of the game.

In the 5th game, however, Sae-Byeok is severely injured. Gi-Hun tries to get help from the masked men, and while his back is turned, Sang-Woo kills her. When Gi-Hun realizes that she is dead, he holds her and cries.

5 Not Sad: The Doctor Who Had Help With The Game

Squid Game 5 Saddest Deaths (& 5 That Werent)

Byeong-gi is a doctor and another player in the game. Along with corrupt guards, Byeong-gi helps with an organ harvesting operation in exchange for information about upcoming games.

When the frontman discovers that the doctor has been receiving hints from the guards and essentially cheating, he executes Byeong-gi and the guards and strings them up for the other players to see. The Squid Game is supposed to be a fair playing field, and the doctor wasn’t playing fair, so he was punished.

4 Saddest: Ali Dies After Being Tricked

Squid Game 5 Saddest Deaths (& 5 That Werent)

Ali is one of the players who enter the game to make money to help their families. He has a wife and a young child at home who he kisses goodbye, promising to reunite with them. Ali fares pretty well in the game until he pairs up with Sang-Woo.

Although Ali is unfamiliar with Korean childhood games, he has a streak of luck in marbles against Sang-Woo. However, Sang-Woo, with his cunning intelligence, tricks Ali into unknowingly giving him all of his marbles. When Ali realizes that he has been tricked, there is already a masked man standing behind him.

3 Not Sad: Sang-Woo Realizes How Far He’s Fallen

Squid Game 5 Saddest Deaths (& 5 That Werent)

Sang-Woo is a character whose morality drastically shifts throughout his involvement in the Squid Game. The first indication of his moral decline comes when he fails to warn Gi-Hun about the honeycomb game.

Before the last game, Sang-Woo’s principles are no longer intact. He murders Sae-Byeok under the guise of ending her suffering, but at this point in the game, he is just morally corrupt. During the 6th game, the Squid Game, Sang-Woo realizes how far he’s fallen and kills himself.

2 Saddest: Gi-Hun’s Mother Dies Alone

Squid Game 5 Saddest Deaths (& 5 That Werent)

A big reason why Gi-Hun re-enters the game after leaving is that his mother needs surgery. She has diabetes and an infection in her feet. Gi-Hun leaves his ailing mother and joins the Squid Game once again.

Fortunately, Gi-Hun is the sole survivor of the Squid Game and returns home with enough money to afford his mother’s surgery—and much more. However, once he arrives home, he finds his mother alone, and dead. As he lies down beside her on the floor, he tells her he has money now.

1 Not Sad: Il-Nam Is A Pretty Terrible Person

Surprisingly, Il-Nam’s death is both one of the saddest, but also not. When he’s just Gi-Hun’s friend and the old guy with a tumor, viewers feel for him and his plight. Especially when he lets Gi-Hun win the marble game. It’s a bittersweet end.

However, when viewers find out Il-Nam is not only still alive, but is the evil mastermind behind the Squid Game, all the sympathy for his character is gone. As he slips away peacefully in his death bed, knowing what he put everyone through, it’s hard to mourn his passing.
