Squid Game: One Quote From Each Main Character That Goes Against Their Personality

The contestants of Squid Game have become iconic because of their strong personalities, but how does a brutal game change each character?

The beloved characters of Squid Game all have strong, independent personalities. Such strong characters are necessary for a show as brutal as Squid Game. Otherwise, these characters would be lost in the crazy events happening all around them. Gi-Hun has his never-ending optimism while Sang-Woo is cold and calculated.

These traits help keep them alive for so long. But eventually, the games will take their toll on everyone. What happens to each of these distinct personalities when they can no longer stand the stress? Such stress can lead people to do and say things they never thought they could.

Cho Sang-Woo: “Hyung, I’m Sorry.”

In the final moments of the Squid Game, Sang-Woo decides to take his fate into his own hands. He ends his life so that Gi-Hun will be able to win the money without the guilt of having killed his friend. This is a shock when compared to almost all of Sang-Woo’s actions leading to this moment. Sang-Woo was very calculated in every move, and often used deception to ensure he would succeed.

It is shocking that Sang-Woo would then throw it all away for Gi-Hun. However, it is important to know that “hyung” is a Korean honorific that men use to refer to a man who is older than them and with whom they are close. Sang-Woo’s use of the word reveals his fond feelings for Gi-Hun and his true regrets. The line is very different from his earlier actions, but Sang-Woo’s character has become a fan favorite.

Abdul Ali: “Don’t Swear At Me!”

This line from Ali doesn’t seem too offensive, but coupled with his actions, it is quite shocking. For the most part, Ali was kind and polite to those around him. He continually referred to Sang-Woo formally even after Sang-Woo asked him to stop. Ali also selflessly saved Gi-Hun’s life in Red Light, Green Light despite not knowing him yet. It’s this kindness that makes Ali a fan favorite.

So, when Ali gets into a fight with his old boss, it is quite shocking. He screams and pushes the man, eventually causing him to crush his hand in a piece of machinery. This is the only time the audience sees Ali hurt someone, even if it was an accident. The fact that Ali yells at this many is quite shocking, as fans never see these emotions from him again.

Han Mi-Nyeo: “I Haven’t Even Named My Baby Yet, So I Couldn’t Register The Baby’s Birth.”

The Mi-Nyeo that fans know is wily, self-seeking, and strong. She warns Deok-Su against betraying her, and he does so she has little trouble getting her revenge. She only wants to get out of the games with her life. It is then odd to think back on the earlier episode in which she mentioned having a child. This seems very out of character as Mi-Nyeo does not seem like the typical mother.

She appears to have no maternal instincts like mothers in media are typically portrayed. It is even weirder when the child is never mentioned again. When the characters return to the games, Mi-Nyeo never brings up the baby. Perhaps Mi-Nyeo does have a child and her own style of parenting, or she simply lied in an attempt to leave the game.

Jang Deok-Su: “Let’s Take The Night Off.”

Deok-Su is a known thug in Squid Game. This is exceedingly obvious in how he conducts himself throughout the games. He is cutthroat, killing anyone who gets in his way. He starts the first night of killing in the giant dorm room, causing complete chaos for most of the night. He only follows the rules if not doing so will get him killed. This makes it very weird when he decides his team should rest for the night instead of taking down the group’s numbers even more.

Gi-Hun has gotten into Deok-Su’s head, and the audience can now see he is scared. Deok-Su normally shows no emotion, so it is odd to see the fear on his face. He doesn’t trust his followers not to turn on him, so he tries even harder to control them. Deok-Su’s night off does not line up with his other brutal actions.

Oh Il-Nam: “What Can We Do To Have Some Fun?”

Il-Nam’s love of games is not new, but the context of this quote is glaringly different from what fans knew of him up to this moment. Up to now, audiences members simply knew Il-Nam as the sweet old man. He was sick and losing his memory, but he was also kind and smart. This quote is glaringly different from anything the contestant Il-Nam did or said.

In one of Squid Game’s biggest plot twists, Il-Nam is talking about how he and his rich clients decided that the only way they could have fun while being rich was to bet on real people losing their lives. Obviously, the games are incredibly twisted and horrifying, but it is almost worse hearing Il-Nam talk about them. He participated in the games and still does not see the problem. While this may be the real Il-Nam, it is not at all the Il-Nam fans know and love.

Kang Sae-Byeok: “Promise Me You’ll Look After My Brother.”

Sae-Byeok is one of the most beloved characters due to her intelligence and determination. The audience learns early on that Sae-Byeok and her younger brother are from North Korea, and that they do not have their parents with them. However, Sae-Byeok does not advertise this to anyone and often tries to avoid telling anyone anything personal about herself.

She is even hesitant to give Gi-Hun her name. It is a true sign of her fate that she is willing to tell Gi-Hun about her little brother once they are down to the final three. Sae-Byeok is desperate for someone to help her brother, and so she is willing to tell Gi-Hun things she never would under normal circumstances.

Hwang Jun-Ho: “Please, Take Me Somewhere Where We Can Be Alone.”

Jun-Ho is the typical hero character. He puts himself in harm’s way so that he can find his brother and unravel the mysteries of the games. He is sneaky and able to fit without raising suspicion (for the most part). This line spoken to one of the VIPs has a very different tone.

Although Jun-Ho ultimately uses the situation to his advantage, it is initially very dangerous to his mission. If he has to remove his mask he will be found out and killed. His life is in the hands of this VIP. Jun-Ho does his best to fight the VIP at first but eventually has to beg for a compromise. This is the closest Jun-Ho gets to being caught, and it is interesting how it changes his strategy.

Seong Gi-Hun: “I Can Kill You Right This Instant.”

Gi-Hun is the kindest character of the cast. He never intentionally kills another contestant, he takes the weakest under his wing, and he’s doing it all because he wants to be a good father again. His final fight with Sang-Woo occurs because Gi-Hun believes he was too brutal in killing Sae-Byeok. This is why Gi-Hun is so likable.

It is a complete turn of events to see Gi-Hun suddenly threatening Il-Nam’s life. Gi-Hun was very close to Il-Nam during the games and was crushed when he lost the marble game. However, after all the suffering he and the others have been through, it angers Gi-Hun that Il-Nam was able to escape unscathed. Gi-Hun was rarely violent for the majority of the show, and so seeing him so aggressive towards Il-Nam, especially in his weakened state, was particularly shocking.
