Superman Gets His Own Version of XMens Coolest Magneto Moment

Warning: contains spoilers for Superman: Son of Kal-El #5!

As one of the strongest beings in the DC Universe, Superman is no stranger to lifting impossibly heavy objects – but as of Superman: Son of Kal-El #5, he’s officially surpassed one of the coolest “heavy object-lifting” scenes in any X-Men film, courtesy of none other than Magneto himself. The son of Clark Kent has spent the last few issues solving the modern-day problems of the era, but even he needs help from time to time. A sudden burst of energy gives him just that…but perhaps not in the intended way.

As his father Clark has Lex Luthor, Jonathan Kent has also made an arch-enemy: President Bendix, the ruler of the island nation of Gamorra. After a boat of refugees escaped the nation and sought refuge in Metropolis, Superman went to confront the President. A weapon aimed directly at Superman causes his body to become massively supercharged with solar power, and Jon suddenly feels a burst of energy. His senses have been supercharged as well, and suddenly can’t ignore the troubles of the entire world.

A doctor at a hospital sits on the steps of the building, completely overwhelmed; in a true case of art imitating life, they’re run out of beds and can no longer take any new patients. Superman flies in at top speed and instructs her to inform Metropolis General that new patients will be transferred there. In the next panel, Superman flies a dozen ambulances across the city, all parked on top of a bridge. It’s a new bridge that hasn’t opened to the public yet, and Superman vows that “I’ll put it back when I’m done here.”

This moment evokes a similar scene toward the climax of the 2006 film X-Men: The Last Stand in which Magneto assaults an island with his army of mutants. In the film, Magneto removes the Golden Gate Bridge from land and uses his powers of magnetic manipulation to transport hundreds of his own troops to the island. Of course, Superman’s act is far more heroic – and as an added bonus (and unlike Magneto), he actually plans to put the bridge back.

Thanks to the separation between the Marvel and DC Universes, Magneto and Superman will likely never meet to compare tactics. Even if that were the case, Superman would most likely disagree with Magneto’s actions, even if his backstory renders him at least slightly sympathetic. Still, Superman proves that when it comes to moving bridges, his decisions build metaphorical bridges as well, unlike the mutant supremacist Magneto.
