Star Wars MBTI© Of The Mandalorian Characters

The characters on the Disney+ Star Wars series The Mandalorian display a wide variety of behaviors and beliefs and these are ultimately rooted in their individual personalities. The Myers-Briggs® Type Indicator is a well-known psychological test created to determine one’s personality type. Each one focuses on four trait decisions: introversion versus extraversion (I or E), sensing versus intuition (S or N), thinking versus feeling (T or F), and judging vs perceiving (J or P).

Out of these sixteen combinations, the characters of The Mandalorian were forged. We have updated this list to include characters from seasons one and two of the show while breaking down their respective personality types, and the reasons why they are the way they are. It’s a fun look into what makes each character tick, based on their respective character traits.

Updated on January 9th, 2021 by Derek Draven: As mentioned above, we have updated this list to feature characters not just from the first season of The Mandalorian, but the second follow-up season as well. More to follow as the show progresses, but these are the core characters featured most prominently thus far. Each one bears a distinctive Myers-Briggs® personality type that can help viewers understand the underlying traits that compel the characters to do what they do. Whether it’s the anti-hero Din Djarin protecting Grogu’s life while still adhering to his code, or the evil Moff Gideon furthering plans for Imperial revenge, there’s a personality type in each of the driver’s seat.

15 Xi’an (ESFP – The Performer)

Star Wars MBTI© Of The Mandalorian Characters

Xi’an is an ESFP – the “enthusiastic improviser. She’s a mercenary with a keen, yet relaxed personality that makes her an even-tempered strategist. This makes it easier for her to develop new methods, even during the heat of conflict or stress.

Unfortunately, Xi’an’s ambitions would be undone by one of the ESFP’s most prominent traits – a desire to be the center of attention. She tried to take down Mando, yet failed because she prioritized feelings over strategy, and suffered as a result.

14 Mayfeld (ESTP – The Dynamo)

Star Wars MBTI© Of The Mandalorian Characters

Mayfeld isn’t the type of guy to hold down a steady job, especially when he could be gallivanting around the galaxy and getting into loads of trouble. His carefree outlaw lifestyle later got the better of him, and he found himself in a New Republic prison camp to serve time for a multitude of criminal offenses.

Still, Mayfeld never lost his wit, sense of humor, or high-energy attitude, all of which are trademarks of ESTPs. He was also able to think quickly on his feet as all ESTPs do, particularly when he and Mando infiltrated an Imperial base and were questioned by a high ranking officer.

13 IG-11 (ISTJ – The Inspector)

Star Wars MBTI© Of The Mandalorian Characters

The bounty droid IG-11 definitely fits the role of the “responsible realist,” initiating self-destruct to prevent himself from being captured, not to mention being so focused on completing his task that he decided he needed to terminate Grogu. As a remnant of the deadly IG combat droid models, both of these behaviors were preprogrammed, and therefore unalterable by his own hand.

Droids naturally gravitate toward the ISTJ personality type, as it’s reserved for those who are task-oriented and rely on systematic judgment in order to make decisions. They don’t always make the most moral ones, but they do tend to make logical ones, despite how cold they might appear.

12 Greef Karga (ESTP – The Dynamo)

Star Wars MBTI© Of The Mandalorian Characters

Greef Karga is an agent of the Bounty Hunter’s Guild. Like most members of the ESTP personality type, he’s somewhat quick to make decisions, even life-changing ones. For instance, after he’s healed by Grogu, he goes from trying to take down the ragtag team of protagonists to fighting alongside them.

His brief moments of candid conversation also highlight the fact that he greatly enjoys being in the company of others, and this, along with other factors like his speed and efficiency definitely points toward the “energetic problem-solver.”

11 Toro Calican (ESFP – The Performer)

Star Wars MBTI© Of The Mandalorian Characters

Toro Calican was a rookie bounty hunter who worked alongside Din to bring Fennec Shand to justice. He definitely seemed to be an ESFP, the personality type also known as the “enthusiastic improviser.” Put simply, he was a practical optimist who tried his best to be ready for anything.

Even his eventual betrayal of Din seems to be a byproduct of his personality, as ESFPs are opportunists by nature. Toro, in particular, was spirited and easygoing, but also enjoyed strategizing so much so that despite it not technically being an ESFP trait, it still fit his personality rather well.

10 Kuiil (INFJ – The Counselor)

Star Wars MBTI© Of The Mandalorian Characters

Kuiil’s choices in life seem guided by an internal force. The reclusive farmer/mechanic is quick to stand by his words rather than take them back, hence his trademark phrase, “I have spoken.” His personality type is most likely INFJ, which would classify him as the “insightful visionary.”

Those with this personality type are traditionally very reserved, love helping others, and don’t enjoy conflict or noise. These are all qualities that Kuiil exemplifies in The Mandalorian’s first chapter alone. When he gives Din a crash-course in Blurrg-riding, he’s highlighting another trend amongst INFJs, gravitating towards jobs that give back, such as teaching, or in his case, farming.

9 Cobb Vanth (ISTP – The Craftsman)

Star Wars MBTI© Of The Mandalorian Characters

At first glance, Cobb Vanth might have seemed like an impulsive, trigger-happy renegade, but underneath his gruff exterior is a man with the best of intentions. ISTPs look for the most practical solutions to fundamental problems, and Vanth had a few to contend with during his time as Marshal of Mos Pelgo.

After locating Boba Fett’s Mandalorian armor, Vanth used it to dispatch a group of outlaws plaguing the port. Later, he teamed up with Mando to kill a gigantic Krayt Dragon that threatened Mos Pelgo’s very existence. Vanth was also quick when it came to adapting to unforeseen situations, which is a signature trait of ISTPs.

8 Fennec Shand (INTJ – The Mastermind)

Star Wars MBTI© Of The Mandalorian Characters

Fennec Shand is an elite assassin who hides in the shadows, cloaking herself in darkness as a result of the bounty placed upon her head. Her decisions seem reasonable, pragmatic, and rational, and she seems to play the part of the “conceptual planner” very well. Other qualities that align her with that particular personality type include her independent nature, her inherent complexity, and her status as a criminal mastermind.

After being saved from death by Boba Fett, she now travels alongside him as his partner. The two are alike in almost every respect, making them natural cohorts. Both realize and respect each other’s adherence to optimization and efficiency, which is life-or-death in the bounty hunting business.

7 Bo-Katan Kryze (ENTJ – The Commander)

Star Wars MBTI© Of The Mandalorian Characters

The Commander type knows how to take charge, and what goes into doing the job right. It’s not about personal glory-hounding or self-congratulatory pats on the back. It’s about developing plans to establish a long-term vision in order to bring order, structure, and harmony to the equation.

Bo-Katan’s life has been thrown into chaos following the Clone Wars, and the eventual rise of the Empire. In this current timeline, she seeks to reclaim the Mandalorian homeworld in order to reunite her people, and that means doing things logically and rationally, as any good Commander should.

6 Ahsoka Tano (ISFJ – The Protector)

Star Wars MBTI© Of The Mandalorian Characters

Since her earliest days as a Jedi Padawan, Ahsoka Tano has held great respect and adoration for life in all its forms. However, her good nature and gentle personality proved to be her weaknesses when she trusted a bit too much in a friend who eventually betrayed her. As a result, Tano left the Jedi Order and forged her own path forward.

The events of Order 66 near the end of the Clone Wars shook Ahsoka to her core, and things only got worse when she realized that her old master Anakin Skywalker had become the terrifying Darth Vader. Still, Ahsoka seeks to protect the innocent by fulfilling her duties and obligations to make the galaxy a safer place, which is the mark of an ISFJ.

5 Carasynthia Dune (ESTP – The Dynamo)

Star Wars MBTI© Of The Mandalorian Characters

Cara and Din have many things in common. For instance, they’re both seasoned fighters with good decision-making skills, but she differs from him in that she doesn’t have the same social disconnect he does, despite her traumatic past. Rather, she enjoys chatting with others in order to discover what makes them tick, such as when she questioned the Mandalorian on why he never takes off his helmet.

Ultimately, even as a battle-hardened shock-trooper-turned-mercenary, she’s able to maintain a high level of integrity, encouraging and linking with others, which earns her the role of the “energetic problem-solver.” Season two revealed that Cara was a native of Alderaan, which was obliterated by the first Death Star. Yet, she hasn’t lost her sense of humor, which she might be using to hide her pain.

4 Boba Fett (INTJ – The Mastermind)

Star Wars MBTI© Of The Mandalorian Characters

INTJs see the world through the lens of practicality and efficiency, and sometimes that comes at the expense of friendliness and social comfort. Boba Fett has spent much of his life as an outlaw following the death of his father Jango at the beginning of the Clone Wars, and he’s had to survive on his wits and instincts.

Unfortunately, this means he tends to work alone with the one person he can trust – himself. However, it should be noted that INTJs are not opposed to teaming up, provided their accomplices can stay up to the task. Fett has teamed up without complaint many times over the years, most recently with Fennec Shand.

3 Moff Gideon (ENTJ – The Commander)

Star Wars MBTI© Of The Mandalorian Characters

Gideon is an Imperial intelligence officer who also serves as the series’ main antagonist. His character most strongly identifies with the ENTJ personality type, also known as the “decisive strategist.” He’s a goal-oriented leader and a constant fighter who carefully plans the movements of each and every one of his subordinates, including his deadly Dark Trooper variants, not unlike pawns in a chess game.

For the most part, he’s inclined to make decisions by using logic and deductive reasoning as opposed to his own intuition, and he’s able to exert control over even the most difficult of situations. When things go bad, he will also identify flaws in a situation and take steps to rectify them, which ENTJs are prone to do.

2 Grogu (INFP – The Healer)

Star Wars MBTI© Of The Mandalorian Characters

While he isn’t cognitively developed enough to have a personality that we can be absolutely certain of, Grogu seems to gravitate towards that of the “thoughtful idealist,” otherwise known as INFP. For the most part, it’s a personality type that seems to encompass those who are still growing and developing their core traits.

INFPs enjoy helping people and solving problems, which are basic concepts that Grogu has been shown to understand and prioritize. They are loyal to a fault and work to be as compassionate and caring as they can be. Again, this description agrees with his overall inclinations, even if he’s prone to violate them occasionally, mostly when it comes to his dietary preferences.

1 Din Djarin (ISTP – The Craftsman)

Din Djarin is an ISTP, or “logical pragmatist.” He’s practical, quiet, and a good problem solver. While he’s not completely introverted, he has a strong connection with his Children of the Watch brethren in the fact that he still prefers to minimize discussion with others, often speaking only to dispute a point or offer a timely witticism. His decisions are calculated, and he’s calm in a crisis.

He went from hunting young Grogu to protecting him from enemies within the space of a single decision, so his mental process is not completely devoid of emotion. In fact, his connection with Grogu has softened his character in a way he did not expect, and this will have ramifications for his character moving forward.
