Star Wars Next Film Saga Rumored To Be Set In The High Republic Era

The next saga of Star Wars movies will reportedly be set hundreds of years before the Skywalker Saga, in “The High Republic” era. For the last 42 years, the Star Wars franchise has revolved around the story of the Skywalkers. Through the original trilogy, the prequels, and the sequel trilogy from Disney, they have – in some way – been at the heart of the galaxy far, far away. The release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, though, is the conclusion of that story (at least for now) and leaves the future of the franchise a mystery.

Star Wars just wrapped up a successful first season of The Mandalorian on Disney+, but Lucasfilm and Disney already have release dates staked out for Star Wars films in 2022, 2024, and 2026. Those movies were supposed to be for the new franchise created by Game of Thrones’ David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, but their recent exit left them vacant. Their films were said to focus on the origin of the Jedi, a prequel setting which was a promising start to a new era for Star Wars on paper. Instead of abandoning this premise altogether, it appears a similar approach is still planned.

According to MakingStarWars, the next Star Wars saga will take place in what is being called “The High Republic.” This setting is believed to be roughly 400 years before any events in the Skywalker Saga. This won’t just be the setting for a single film, or even a trilogy, as the report notes that the hope is an entire series of interconnecting films will land in this era. All of this is currently unconfirmed for the time being, however.

If this rumored report is accurate, the next Star Wars saga will explore a time in the universe which has barely been touched in new film canon. The report mentions that this would be a time after Darth Bane established the Sith’s Rule of Two, and when the Jedi are incredibly active. While the events of these films would be set well before most of the franchise’s known characters could appear, Yoda would have still been a Jedi during this time period. Otherwise, this era is ripe for a new franchise to create brand new characters who are not associated with or related to anyone fans already know.

It isn’t yet clear if these reported details are correct, but it may not be too long before Lucasfilm does confirm the specifics of the next movie. Prior reports claimed the 2022 Star Wars movie – which is unofficially the first film in this rumored series – already has a director in place. Lucasfilm has yet to announce who will be helming the movie, but that report indicated confirmation would come at the beginning of this year. With another divisive franchise entry out in theaters, it may be better for Star Wars to announce what is happening with “The High Republic” sooner rather than later.
