‘Boston’ Rob Mariano is one of the most famous Survivor players, first having competed on Survivor: Marquesas in 2002 and most recently starring on an all-winners season in 2019. Rob cemented his place as Survivor royalty when he took control of the game in Season 8, establishing himself as a master of the game and a villain too.

Over five seasons and one appearance as a mentor on Island of the Idols, Rob has had plenty of great moments. Some were a little devious, others bold, and some incredibly romantic. Regardless, Rob has always been an unforgettable enigma, and someone future Survivor players will always compare their games to.

10 When He Aligned With Amber

On the first-ever All-Star season, Rob, a pre-merge boot in Marquesas and Amber, the quiet sixth-place finisher in Australia ended up on the same tribe, Chapera.

Rob quickly took a liking to Amber, citing her as being beautiful and smart in a confessional, and made an alliance with her from the start. This decision proved to be a smart one because it led to them dominating the game and falling in love in the process.

9 When He Did His Best Ethan Impression

On a lazy day in All-Stars, the Chapera tribe decided to dress up and impersonate members of the other tribe. Alicia did her best Jerri Manthey, Amber developed a Tina Wesson accent, and Rob put on a straw wing and kicked around a coconut to poke fun at Africa winner Ethan Zohn.

The Ethan impression was a fun moment with Rob and his fellow castaways to allow the game to become more fun and less serious. It was even better when Ethan and Rob reunited as teammates and alliance members on Winners at War, putting their former ‘feud’ to rest.

8 When He Put An ‘A’ On His Arm

A tribe switch on Day 24 of All-Stars separated Amber from her former Chapera tribe members, including Rob. When her tribe lost the immunity challenge, Boston Rob attempted to cut a deal with Lex van den Berghe to save Amber and cut Jerri instead.

Back at camp as he awaited Amber’s fate, Rob sulked and drew an ‘A’ on his arm for his closest confidant. It led to one of the most quoted Rob lines of all time, “I put an ‘a’ on my arm…for Ambuh.”

7 When He Pitted Himself Against Russell…Twice

Heading into Heroes v.s Villains, nobody knew how dangerous of a player Russell Hantz was. All the villains on his tribe severely underestimated him, having not seen his season which filmed right before Season 20.

Rob and Russell clashed immediately, Russell wanting nothing more than to defeat the Boston native and steal his spot as one of the most triumphant villains the game had ever seen. Russell won that round, but they would go head to head once more in Redemption Island, where Rob finally got his revenge.

6 When He Implemented The Buddy System

In Redemption Island, Rob kept his tribe, Ometepe in check by establishing ‘The Buddy System’. Everyone on the tribe was to have a buddy, someone you could never go off on the island without. This way, he had eyes on everyone and tribemates that would report back to him if anyone was behaving out of line.

His buddy was Grant, and sometimes Philip, while Natalie and Ashley also kept each other company a great deal of the game. Forming ‘The Buddy System’ which was given its own episode title, all allowed Rob to take out his alliance members one by one as the end of the game neared and secure himself the victory.

5 And Then The Buddy System Imploded

When Rob was swapped to the Yard tribe on Winners at War, he attempted to re-establish the Buddy System by keeping constant tabs on his former Sele tribemates Adam and Ben. However, in a game with all winners, it didn’t pan out as great as when he was on a team with newbies.

Ben and Adam were able to sneak away separately to talk with Sarah and Sophie, agreeing to vote Boston Rob out of the game. Though it was sad to see his game come to an end, it was a great moment for Rob to learn that old habits die hard.

4 When He Took Amber To The Final Two With Him

Rob faced a heavy decision when he won the Final Immunity Challenge in Survivor: All-Stars. He could take Jenna Lewis, someone he had a very good chance at beating to the Final Two, or his love interest Amber, who had wronged the same amount of people as he had but was more kind and likable, and could possibly win out over him.

When it came down to it, Rob did the noble thing and voted out Jenna, taking his girlfriend to the finals with him even if it meant he might not win. The moment proved to fans how much he loved Amber, possibly even more than he loved the game.

3 When He Formed The Old School Alliance

Despite being on opposing sides of the Villains tribe on Heroes vs. Villains, Parvati and Rob bonded quickly on Winners at War. Both slightly older and parents of young children, Parv and Rob realized that they needed each other this time around, and even roped in Ethan to their Old School, winners from earlier seasons, squad.

This was a great moment for Rob and fans of the show, who had been waiting to see older winners take control of the game together. Of course, the alliance was short-lived as their New School counterparts took them down, but the moments we got with Rob running the group was fun and nostalgic.

2 When He Finally Won

After three failed attempts at gaining the title of Sole Survivor, Rob Mariano finally claimed victory in Season 22: Redemption Island. His wife, Amber, and daughters Lucia and Carina in the audience, Rob got what had been a long time coming: a million dollars.

Rob played a pretty perfect game his winning season, dominating his tribe and taking two weaker players in Natalie Tenerelli and Philip Shepard to the end. He would have won unanimously too, if it hadn’t been for one vote being thrown Philip’s way. Fans of Rob were finally able to rejoice as Jeff Probst announced that he had been crowned the Sole Survivor.

1 When He Got The Girl

Perhaps Rob’s best moment came when he confessed in a confessional that he had real, genuine feelings for his alliance member Amber Brkich. As the end of the game neared, he questioned what their life outside of the game would be, but hoped that their love had become real for her too.

Before the final votes were read and a winner was announced, Rob took it upon himself to propose to Amber in front of everyone in Madison Square Garden at the finale. Jeff pointed out that the game was still in play until the votes were read, and Amber upon accepting could be a millionaire, either way, the votes went. Thankfully, she said yes, and although he didn’t win the season, he gained a wife and later four beautiful daughters, and a life full of more Survivor.
