Ever since the early versions of the action-adventure sandbox game Terraria, the magic class has been arguably the strongest class in the game. With the large number of magic weapons and abilities, Magicians are able to use many different attack styles, which are good for dealing with all the unique enemies in the game.
But, the lower armor defense and heavy reliance on mana can lead to Magicians being vulnerable in ways that the other classes are not. Because of this, it is important to know which magic weapons will work the best out of the large selection of choices.
10 Space Gun
Even though it is called a “gun,” the Space Gun is a magic weapon instead of a ranged weapon because it uses mana rather than ammunition. Although it is a pre-Hardmode weapon, it fires at the same velocity as the Megashark, which is a Hardmode ranged weapon. If the player is wearing full Meteor armor, then this gun will not cost any mana, so it is the perfect weapon to use when low on mana. With the ability to deal 17 damage and hit up to three enemies in one shot, it is no wonder that the space gun is one of the best weapons.
But, in order to get this weapon, then a meteor must crash into the world, which will then leave behind a meteorite that the player can use to make the gun and armor. While the chance of this event happening is extremely high, there is still a chance that a player might miss it. Also, the Space Gun quickly loses its value once the player enters Hardmode.
9 Flamelash
Another pre-Hardmode weapon that is extremely helpful is the Flamelash, which is a magic wand that launches a ball of fire which can be controlled by the player. After going through the Dungeon and grabbing a Shadow Key from the Golden Chests, the player can possibly gain a Flamelash by opening the Shadow Chests in The Underworld using the Shadow Key.
This weapon deals about 32 damage, targets nearby enemies if the player is not directly controlling it, and can hit multiple targets. Since it also inflicts the “On Fire!” debuff on enemies and does not use too much mana, this weapon works well even later into Hardmode.
8 Spectre Staff
After defeating Plantera and entering the dungeon again, one of the new enemies the player will encounter is the Ragged Caster, which has a possibility of dropping the Spectre Staff. This magic weapon deals about 65 damage and targets nearby enemies.
Since a single projectile can hit three times before disappearing and players can fire multiple shots quickly in a row, the weapon has a high DPS that can easily take out waves of enemies. But, since it is a rare drop from Ragged Casters, it can be a bit difficult to get this weapon, and it does not do as well against solo enemies.
7 Bat Scepter
To make up for the Spectre Staff’s struggles, the player can get the Bat Scepter from the Pumpkin Moon event. Similar to the Dark Harvest summoner whip, the player can get this magic wand by defeating the Pumpking. Since it does about 45 damage and it summons multiple bats that stick to enemies, this weapon is great on solo enemies but terrible against waves of enemies.
The only problem is that getting this weapon can be a challenge. After defeating Plantera, the player has to make a Pumpkin Moon Medallion to start the event, which requires 30 Pumpkins, 5 Ectoplasm, and 10 Hallowed Bars. Then, the player has to defeat the Pumpking, who is the hardest enemy in the event, and even then the player may not get the item because it is slightly rare.
6 Betsy’s Wrath
Similar to the Shinobi Infiltrator Armor for Summoners, Betsy’s Wrath is a magic weapon that can only be obtained through the difficult Old One’s Army event, which can be started by buying the Eternia Crystal and its stand at the Tavernkeep NPC. After defeating the Golem, the player unlocks the third version of the event that has a miniboss called Betsy, who has a chance to drop the item.
While it is extremely difficult to get this item, it is worth it because it is one of the best support weapons in the game. With its high damage of about 100 and the fact that it inflicts the “Betsy’s Curse,” which significantly lowers an enemy’s defense, it is a perfect supplementary weapon to other magic weapons.
5 Spirit Flame
Even though the Spirit Flame is a Hardmode magic weapon that deals about 85 damage, it can be obtained extremely early on in Hardmode if the player is lucky. If this happens, then the player will have no trouble dealing with enemies and bosses above ground for most of Hardmode because of the weapon’s homing ability and splash damage.
But, the player will need to get two Forbidden Fragments, which can only be gotten from Sand Elementals during Hardmode sandstorms, and a Desert Spirit Lamp, which can only be gotten from Desert Spirits from underground Corrupt or Crimson biomes, in order to make this item. Also, the weapon does not work well underground because the fires from the weapon need to be able to spawn in open air.
4 Nightglow
Another weapon that can be difficult to obtain and use is the Nightglow magic weapon. After defeating Plantera, the player can decide to fight the Empress of Light, which has a high chance of dropping this weapon. But, this boss is one of the hardest bosses in the entire game even though she is an optional boss. Also, since this weapon spawns projectiles similarly to the Spirit Flame, it can be hard to use it in tight spaces.
Despite this, this weapon can be one of the best weapons in the game if the player can manage to use it properly. Since each of the multiple summoned crystals hit enemies several times with high amounts of damage, it can be a devastating power in the right hands. It does use a lot of mana, but that can be fixed with the right Summoner equipment.
3 Stellar Tune
Besides the Nightglow, the other powerful magic weapon that a player can obtain from the Empress of Light is the Stellar Tune. This weapon fires star-shaped projectiles, which target enemies and deal about 85 damage. Since it has a wide range of movement and even has some splash damage, it is perfect for dealing with hard bosses and enemies.
Because it can move through blocks, it is better than the limited Spirit Flame and Nightglow. But, it is a fairly rare drop from the Empress of Light, which is already tough to beat once.
2 Charged Blaster Cannon
Inspired by Mega Man’s iconic Mega Buster, the Charged Blaster Cannon is the only magic weapon that can be even remotely compared to the magic weapon Last Prism, which is the magic weapon dropped by the Moon Lord who is the final boss of the game. With its high damage of about 100, infinite piercing, and wide range of possible attacks, this weapon is an absolute powerhouse.
But, this weapon only has an extremely small chance of dropping from enemies during the random Martian Madness event. Also, compared to other magic weapons, it is not as flexible since it can only move horizontally.
1 Razorblade Typhoon
Arguably, one of the best magic weapons in the game for most possible situations is the Razorblade Typhoon, which is a spell tome dropped by the optional Hardmode boss Duke Fishron. While Duke Fishron can technically be fought as soon as Hardmode starts, he is difficult enough that it might be best to fight him after defeating the Golem.
Fighting him is absolutely worth it, however, because this weapon has a high chance of dropping. Since it has a high damage of about 90 and has one of the quickest homing attacks, this can devastate most kinds of enemies.
