The Mandalorian Why Ahsoka Has Two White Lightsabers

Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) joined The Mandalorian in season 2, shown wielding two white lightsabers. After months of rumors, The Mandalorian season 2, episode 5 – “The Jedi” — finally brought the fan-favorite former Jedi to live-action. This came after a name drop in season 2, episode 3, and saw Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) journey to the city of Calodan on the forest moon of Corvus.

The Mandalorian season 2, episode 5 wastes no time bringing Ahsoka to live-action, and this includes her frequently using her two white lightsabers. During Ahsoka’s story in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, she predominantly used green lightsabers. However, season 7 saw the show retcon Star Wars canon by having her green lightsabers replaced by a pair of blue ones given to her by Anakin Skywalker. Ahsoka leaves them behind at the end of the season, and Star Wars: Rebels introduced the idea of her using white lightsabers instead. Since The Mandalorian picks up after the events of that show, the white lightsabers were maintained, but what is the in-universe reason and meaning behind them?

Star Wars: Rebels didn’t explore how Ahsoka got the two white lightsabers she still wields in The Mandalorian, but other canon materials have. EK Johnston’s Ahsoka novel showed the former Jedi in hiding due to Order 66 before realizing that she had to do something to fight back against the Empire. This led to her battling Inquisitors and defeating one of them in combat. Ahsoka took the red kyber crystals from the Inquisitor’s lightsaber and purified it for her own use. Star Wars canon introduced the idea of bonding kyber crystals with its owner, with dark side Force users turning them red and light side users able to generate green, blue, purple, yellow, and orange. But, since the kyber crystals Ahsoka was using had already been turned white, the process of purifying them led to the rare white lightsabers.

As cool as the white lightsabers look (and help Ahsoka stand out visually), the color choice also has some additional meaning. All of the lightsaber colors have a meaning behind them now in canon, such as blue representing bravery. With Ahsoka’s white lightsabers, Dave Filoni revealed that they represent Ahsoka being neither Jedi nor Sith. Ahsoka has seen how the Jedi Order faltered and has no interest in preserving those ideals, with her even noting in The Mandalorian that the order fell long ago. Still, she is a light side Force user who is trying to use her abilities to defeat evil across the galaxy. The color of white is traditionally a symbol of purity and goodness too, and both of those traits can be used to define Ahsoka.

When it comes to why Ahsoka has two lightsabers instead of just one like most Force users, that choice goes back to her days as a Jedi padawan. She started out with just a single blade like most others, but Ahsoka eventually forged a second, shorter blade. This became a staple of Ahsoka’s fighting style and is something she’s continued to use many years later. Ahsoka is not the only character in Star Wars canon to frequently use two lightsabers, but she is the most prominent. Unless she forgot to fish one of her lightsabers out of the water following her fight with the Magistrate in The Mandalorian, Ahsoka should continue to wield two blades the next time she appears.
