The Office Is Leaving Netflix for Peacock But Only the First Two Seasons Will Be Free

At midnight Pacific Time on January 1, when the entirety of the continental United States will have welcomed 2021, 2020 will dish out its final blow: The Office will leave Netflix. Immediately after its departure from the world’s biggest streaming platform, though, the series will then become available on NBCUniversal’s Peacock. With that said, let’s look at what changes fans can expect with the move and what it means for both the show and the rival streaming platforms.

The Office has been one of the biggest successes for Netflix. In 2020 alone, it has been the second most-watched show on the service, and while it may seem that its impending departure may have added to the show’s viewership numbers, its success is not a phenomenon. Netflix only started releasing streaming statistics of its shows this year, but Nielsen — the company that measures ratings for broadcast and cable TV — tracked the data for the two years prior, revealing similar results for the sitcom.

Obviously, The Office will leave a big hole in Netflix’s programming. And while this vacancy will certainly be filled by something else down the line, it still makes one wonder what this means for fans of The Office and how they can still watch the chaos unfolding at their favorite paper company. Well, there is some good news and unfortunately, some bad news.

The good news is that the show’s new home, NBC’s fresh streaming platform, Peacock, will offer the first two seasons of the show and extras (with ads) in its free, limited-access tier. Unfortunately, the bad news is that the remainder of the show, Seasons 3 to 9, will be locked away behind a paywall in “Peacock Premium.” Depending on whether you want to buy an ad-free experience or not, the price for Peacock’s premium subscription is either $4.99 (with ads) or $9.99 (without ads) per month.

The idea behind Peacock offering the first two seasons of The Office for free is clear: it’s supposed to draw people in and make them subscribe to the premium tier in order to watch the remaining seven seasons. NBC is clearly putting a lot on the shoulders of one of its more popular shows, but if it has even a margin of the success it had on Netflix, Peacock won’t have any trouble getting people to sign up.

With The Office gone from Netflix, it will be interesting to see how things shift in the streaming world. It’s possible that other non-Netflix originals could follow suit, and with NBC and Warner Bros. entering the market in recent months, streaming is clearly about to enter a new age.
