United Just Flew 100 Passengers On A Plane Fueled By Cooking Grease

United Airlines on Wednesday flew the world’s first passenger flight using 100-percent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). With sustainability becoming a major goal across industries and around the world, the transportation sector is looking at ways to reduce its carbon footprint. Electric cars are already becoming more mainstream, and now electric ships are also taking to the waters in Europe and other parts of the world.

However, even though environmentally cleaner vehicles are becoming the norm, air travel remains a significant contributor to human-induced global warming. Flights currently depend almost entirely on fossil fuels and their emissions have a highly negative impact on climate change. While the transportation sector as a whole is trying to reduce its carbon footprint, aviation remains a concern and the emphasis is on innovative measures to change things in the future.

As part of its plans to demonstrate sustainable air travel, United Airlines on Wednesday completed a 612-mile flight between Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport and Washington D.C.’s Reagan National Airport using 100-percent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the right engine, which emitted an estimated 75-percent less carbon dioxide than traditional jet fuel. According to the press release, the Boeing 737 MAX 8 flew with more than 100 passengers on board with 500 gallons of SAF made up of fats, cooking oils, and grease produced by World Energy. United said that the sustainable fuel emits 80-percent less carbon dioxide than conventional jet fuel over its life cycle.

Current Regulations Don’t Allow 100-Percent SAF

Some flights already operate with a mix of SAF and regular jet fuel, but current regulations only allow airlines to use blended fuel with up to 50-percent SAF at most. However, United secured permission to operate one engine on 100-percent SAF while the other ran on conventional jet fuel, proving that there’s no operational differences between the two. United also said that it believes the maiden all-SAF flight will “set the stage for more scalable uses of SAF by all airlines” in the years to come.

United also announced a slew of new companies joining its Eco-Skies Alliance that aims to reduce greenhouse emissions by the aviation sector. Microsoft, Meta (formerly Facebook), Salesforce, Visa, and Biogen are among the twelve new companies to join the program. The alliance has already reportedly purchased around 7.1 million gallons of SAF this year, eliminating around 66,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. The airline further said that it is looking to reduce its greenhouse emissions 100-percent by 2025 without relying on conventional carbon offsets. As part of its plans, the company recently agreed to purchase 1.5 billion gallons of SAF from Alder Fuels, which it says is enough to fly more than 57 million passengers. While United says it is working towards reducing its carbon footprint, more needs to be done to de-carbonize aviation travel in the coming years.
