Was Removing Firearms From Dying Light 2 the Right Choice?
Guns and ammo might not have been the most important aspect of the first Dying Light, but they were a nice option to have in combat.

The highly anticipated Dying Light 2 is finally available for players to enjoy, with tons of enhanced parkour and melee combat abilities/mechanics that have always been the center of the series. However, there’s one notable element of the first title that is completely non-existent in Dying Light 2; guns and ammunition. This is in stark contrast to the first Dying Light, which included up to 5 firearm types with The Following DLC installed. So why such a drastic change?
The game setting explains that their absence is due to the GRE and local military confiscating and using virtually all the firearms and ammo the city of Villedor had in a desperate fight to keep the infected hordes from entering the city. However, in doing so they exhausted their entire arsenal. This, in addition to the loss of factories and specialists capable of making more ammo, forced survivors to resort to using mainly medieval era weapons to survive. In place of firearms, the ranged weapons found across Villedor include throwing knives, spears, bows and arrows, crossbows and more.
From a gameplay perspective, it seems Techland removed firearms in order to focus on and emphasize melee combat. This is understandable because at a certain level and part of the main story of the first Dying Light, guns and ammo became very easy to come across and were frequently used by players in combat scenarios and boss fights. Despite their availability and power, guns were not considered practical to use throughout most of the game, mainly due to the loud noise they made which attracted more and more infected to attack players.
Given that Dying Light 2 is set over a decade after the fall of civilization, it was to be expected that firearms and ammo would be extremely rare to come across and still just as dangerous to use in most scenarios. However, their near-total absence has largely been seen as a disappointing choice by fans. Many other notable game series set decades into an apocalypse, such as The Last of Us, still make guns and ammo available despite their expected rarity. This allows for a healthy mix of combat options depending on player preference.
There is only one type of actual firearm present in the game that players can wield known as the Boomstick, a custom-made double-barrel shotgun that can be crafted using scrap. In order to get the blueprint for this weapon, players must progress through the main story until they complete the mission “Observatory.” Afterward, make your way to any Craftmaster within the Peacekeeper faction’s territory where it can be purchased for $400. Each Boomstick costs 100 scrap to build and only carries two rounds for each barrel to fire before it is broken and becomes useless. The blueprint can be upgraded so that future Boomsticks deal much more damage to enemies.
It’s possible that future updates and DLC might see firearms make a return to the game, be it through uncovering a secret military bunker or a Craftmaster building simple, rudimentary black powder guns like muskets. While melee and free running should always take center stage in the series, gunplay should at least have retained a place in the world of Dying Light.
