Who Sasha Banks Plays In The Mandalorian Season 2 Episode 3

Warning: SPOILERS ahead for The Mandalorian season 2, episode 3, “The Heiress”

The Mandalorian season 2’s latest episode saw Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) encounter a mysterious member of his own kind played by Sasha Banks — here’s the character’s name and everything that’s known about her. Created by Jon Favreau in collaboration with Dave Filoni, the Star Wars spinoff has followed a lone Mandalorian warrior as he sought to reunite a mysterious alien Child with members of the Jedi. In the process, The Mandalorian has drawn simultaneously from several corners of the sprawling galactic universe, including the movies and Filoni’s own animated series: Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Din Djarin’s search, fortunately, turned a significant corner in The Mandalorian season 3, episode 3, “The Heiress”. It also marked the biggest connection yet to the animated shows, when Din was saved from a trap by a trio of fellow Mandalorian. After a brief, initial dispute, the group’s leader revealed herself to be Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff). She was flanked by two other warriors. Reportedly named by George Lucas himself, the first was Axe Woves. Played by British actor Simon Kassianides, Axe was visibly dismayed to learn that Din Djarin was a “Child of the Watch” and thus part of a more cultish tribe of Mandalorians. The second, meanwhile, was played by WWE star Sasha Banks (real name Mercedes Varnado). First glimpsed observing Din’s arrival on Trask, she later aided in the rescue and cut a loyal, stoic figure at Bo-Katan’s side.

Ever since Banks/Varnado’s casting was revealed and she was glimpsed in The Mandalorian’s season 2 trailer, many theorized that she would play Sabine Wren. The theory held weight due to Sabine being another popular animated character and an ally of Bo-Katan’s. However, it turned out to not be the case. Though she was not directly introduced by name, the subtitles and official IMDB credits the character as being named Koska Reeves. No such character has ever been previously mentioned within the expansive Star Wars lore. As such, Koska Reeves is an entirely new creation for the show and the galaxy at large.

Despite her relatively new introduction to the mythology, there is still much that can be discerned about the character. Based on the color scheme and general style of the armor, Koska Reeves is no doubt a long-serving member of Bo-Katan’s Nite Owls. Based on the armor’s wear and tear, it’s just as likely that she’s seen her fair share of action. A large part of that was fighting in the oft-mentioned Great Purge that took place on Mandalore and was enacted by the villainous Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito). As such, the quest to track him down is potentially just as much personal (on one level or another) as it is a pursuit of Bo-Katan’s stolen Darksaber.

Equally, Koska Reeves’ traditional tough and stoic Mandalorian demeanor belied a much more heroic nature. Learning The Child was in peril, Koska wasted no time jumping into the water, and battled a Mamacore creature, in order to rescue him. Koska also treated him with immense care afterward, quickly seeming to earn Baby Yoda’s affection — he was seen watching and even emulating her throughout the episode.

Unlike the coterie of Imperial soldiers that the Mandalorian squad clashed with, Koska Reeves also ended the episode very much alive and intact. As such, like most of those Din Djarin has crossed paths with, she will no doubt return at some point in a future episode of The Mandalorian, their respective quests once more overlapping. When she does, even more facets of her personality and further elements of her still-largely-mysterious backstory will most certainly be revealed.
