Warwick Davis, the star of Willow, introduced the cast of the upcoming Disney+ series in a tongue-in-cheek trailer that poked fun at the fact that the 1988 classic was a good deal older than most of its stars.

Among the cast members that Warwick Davis introduced were Dempsey Bryk (Heartland), Amar Chadha-Patel (Aladdin), Ellie Bamber (Prince and Prejudice and Zombies), Ruby Cruz (Castle Rock), Erin Kellyman (Solo) and Tony Revolori, who played Flash Thompson in all three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man films.

“My dad and I actually watched Willow back in the day when I was a kid and I grew up loving it, man,” Revolori said. “It was great. You know, my second favorite fantasy adventure behind Lord of the Rings.”

Davis, who had already teased Revolori for having starred in a few “Insta stories, TikToks and the like,” mocked his younger co-star by telling him to cease from mentioning Peter Jackson’s trilogy.

Willow, directed by Ron Howard and produced by George Lucas, has drawn a number of comparisons with Lord of the Rings over the years, mainly because the film also features a hobbit-like character named Willow Ufgood who lives in a fantasy setting. Despite receiving mixed reviews upon release, the film has become a cult favorite in the intervening years with fans long calling for a sequel — a fact that Davis jokingly acknowledged in the video.

“Yeah, we heard you, die hard Willow fans,” Davis said. “The Willowmongers. The Willingmesoftlies. The lowboys. You get the idea. We’re still workshopping fanbase names for that.”

The original film focused on Willow going on a quest to save a baby prophesied to cause the downfall of evil sorceress queen Bavmorda. The aftermath of his adventure was continued in a trilogy of novels co-written by Lucas and comic book legend Chris Claremont, but the upcoming Disney+ series appears like it will embark in a different direction. Casting information indicates that the show will pick up a number of years after the original movie ended, with Davis reprising his role and guiding his younger co-stars on a desperate mission to save a kidnapped prince.

Willow, which began filming in June in Wales, was originally going to be directed by Crazy Rich Asians’ Jon M. Chu. Chu dropped out of directing duties due to coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown restrictions and family obligations in January, and Stephen Woolfenden will be directing the first episodes of the series in his place.
