Riot Games is hiring new talent to work on a League of Legends MMO, and it appears The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt developer Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz is joining its project. Riot Games made known that a League of Legends MMO was in development last year, and has been somewhat quiet on details since.

When the League of Legends MMO was announced by Riot Games Vice President Greg Street, that announcement was further corroborated by job postings for the new game. Little else about the game has been officially announced, so it remains to be seen how the game will play or even look. Riot Games has branched out a few times from the original MOBA that started it all, including two League of Legends story-based spinoffs, so an MMO is probably not a shocking direction for the franchise.

Recently, former The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077 narrative designer Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz (via Dot Esports) announced he is joining Riot Games to work on the (assumedly League of Legends) MMO. It is possible his role will fall in a narrative-or-quest-design capacity. While he didn’t reveal any more details about the game in his announcement, the fact that he’s been brought on suggests Riot Games is looking to craft a compelling narrative for their MMO. Tomaszkiewicz worked as a narrative designer on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077, and was responsible for much of the quest material in both games, potentially including a few weird Witcher 3 side quests.

Big career update – I spent last few months meeting and talking to a number of great people and Teams, and now I’m pleased to announce that I’ll be joining @riotgames on their upcoming MMO project. I’m excited and looking forward to this new challenge, stay tuned! pic.twitter.com/9dfKdBCG7B

This hiring should be impactful on the League of Legends MMO. Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz has the pedigree of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, a game praised for its strong narrative, particularly the strength of its sidequests. While his other game has had a bit of a rougher road, mostly due to Cyberpunk 2077’s missing gameplay features and bugs, it also has a strong narrative focus. As a result, Riot Games’ decision to bring aboard one of CD Projekt Red’s narrative designers for its new MMO speaks to the high-caliber story the company is likely seeking to include in the game.

Given that Riot Games is still hiring top-level roles like narrative designers, it’s likely that the League of Legends MMO release is still some while off. However, if they keep hiring talent with strong credits to their names like Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz, it’s possible that this new League of Legends journey will be worth the wait.
