The series Hell on Wheels gets its name from a town built for workers of the first Transcontinental Railroad in the United States. This little town was called Hell on Wheels. The dramatic show portrays the lives of the workers, prostitutes, surveyors and families living in Hell on Wheels at the time of the railroad’s construction and is filled with mystery, drama, and suspense.
It could be argued the convincing cast of characters is one of the main reasons the show has been so successful, as they are the ones who bring the thrilling inter-woven narratives of the series to life. Here are just a few lesser known facts about them:
10 To boldly go!
The lead role of Cullen Bohannon is played by Anson Mount, who this year celebrates his tenth year on screen. While he began his career with small television roles, Mount’s first big break came with the movie, Urban Legends: Final Cut.
It appears that the talented actor is growing from strength to strength. He recently landed a key role in Star Trek: Discovery as Captain Christopher Pike! He can only go onwards and upwards in his acting profession.
9 No stranger to the screen
Colm Meaney, who plays Thomas C. Durrant in the series, arrived on the Hell on Wheels set with a wealth of experience, having begun his acting career in 1978! As such, the series’ producers had no doubt he would continue to shine on the screen.
Since the series ended, he has starred in a number of films: Pele: Birth of a Legend, Norm of the North, The Journey, and The Secrets of Emily Blair. He was also recently cast in Tolkien, which debuted on the big screen in 2018.
8 Step Up
Dohn Norwood, who plays Psalms Jackson in Hell on Wheels, was relatively unknown in the industry when he was cast in the role, mainly landing bit-part roles in TV series and the occasional movie (Bruce Almighty). With a screen name like Psalms, it’s hard to imagine his next success was in the television series, The Sinner, for which he landed a role as a determined investigative officer, Detective Dan Leroy.
Most recently, he starred in the movies, All the Way, playing Ralph Abernathy, and What Still Remains, starring as Peter.
7 Video games legend
Every actor wants to leave an impression on his fans, and it would see this is exactly what Christopher Heyerdahl (who plays Mr. Swede in Hell on Wheels) has done.
Since his role in the western series, he has appeared in two video games: Wolfenstein: The New Colossus and Far Cry 5. Not quite the conventional success route for an actor but as most of his younger fans would agree, that is seriously cool! He’s also had two recurring roles in the television series Van Helsing and Tin Star.
6 Bring on the awards
Chelah Horsdal played such a convincing Maggie Palmer in the series that she was nominated for two Leo Awards for her believable, skillful portrayal of the character. As the series Hell on Wheels came to a close, Chelah was also cast as Helen Smith in The Man in the High Castle. For this role, she was awarded Best Supporting Performance by a Female in a Dramatic Series.
In 2016, she was again awarded, this time in the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival for her role as the Queen in Candiland. During all this time, Chelah also continued to star in When Calls the Heart.
5 Black Box wonder
Viewers might have wondered what happened to Siobhan Williams, who originally starred as the character of Naomi Bohannon in the hit series. Directors of the show had to skillfully position MacKenzie Porter as the new Naomi after Williams was cast in ABC’s Black Box and due to schedule clashes, subsequently made the decision to move to the new show.
We can forgive her for making the move and kudos to the team behind the show for allowing for a relatively seamless transition to the new Naomi. MacKenzie had big shoes to fill but filled them with convincing and exemplary acting – after all, it’s not an easy feat pulling off a Bohannon, as fans of the show will know.
4 History
Eddie Spears portrays Joseph Black Moon in Hell on Wheels, the son of an Indian Cheyenne Chief. After being baptized, Joseph sets out to establish himself as part of Hell on Wheels, while also dealing with the new culture that he has just embraced.
Living the early parts of his life in an Indian Reservation, Eddie Spears started his career portraying mostly Native American characters in Westerns, with his first movie appearance coming in the form of 1993’s Geronimo. Recently, Spears has made a name for himself in the TV scene, earning roles on Sleepy Hollow and Z Nation.
3 It’s a rap!
Not all cast members grew up with dreams of acting on stage. Elam, the slave who has been set free and now seeks work in Hell on Wheels, is played by Common, who was surprisingly a rapper before attacking acting as his latest conquest.
His character arrives in the west looking for work on the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad. Common brings an interesting dynamic to the cast, as a half-white, half-black man, with the best of both worlds. His unconventional personal life and profession have enabled him to break stereotypes which might otherwise dull the narrative of the exciting onscreen western series.
2 Irish rose
Dominique McElligott hadn’t done any work in the US – or even visited the country – before joining the cast of Hell on Wheels. The Irish actress was having a drink in London with some friends when they suggested she do an interview in America for the show.
They enticed her with the promise of getting into America for free! She arrived in the US on 5 July and went for the audition the very next day and the rest, you could say, was history! Talk about leaving an immediate impression, as everybody knows making it in Hollywood is about as challenging of a prospect as they come.
1 Rising comic legend
Anson Mount is far busier than one could imagine, having recently been cast in the role of Black Bolt in the Marvel Television Inhumans series. For this, he will star alongside a talented cast, including hunky Iwan Rheon, who is playing the role of Maximus for the series.
We are sure with his finesse at acting, he will be a successful Black Bolt… and even if not, he has the good looks and brawn to pull off the hunky comic book legend. Here’s to reaching new frontiers in acting!
