Avatar Sequels Take Place Partially on Earth Says James Cameron

According to director James Cameron, the highly anticipated Avatar 2 sequels will partially take place on Earth. Releasing in 2009, Avatar became a cultural phenomenon and shattered global box office records, soon becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time. Four sequels to the film were put into production not long after it was released, the first of which, after numerous delays, is scheduled to release in December 2022.

Details regarding the sequels still remain scarce, but it has been confirmed that a number of actors from the original will be returning, including Sam Worthington as Jake, Zoe Saldana as Neytiri, Sigourney Weaver as Dr. Augustine, and Stephen Lang as Colonel Quaritch. Cameron has also previously revealed that the sequels will explore different biomes in Pandora, with Avatar 2 and 3 expected to take place primarily in and around various bodies of water. Story details remain closely guarded, but Avatar 2 is expected to follow Jake and Neytiri as they leave their home with their three children and fight to stay together in the face of new threats.

In a new Directors on Directors segment from Variety, Cameron sits down with Dune director Denis Villeneuve to discuss, among other things, his upcoming Avatar sequels. While Cameron doesn’t let too much slip, he does reveal that the sequels will be different from the first Avatar in the sense that portions of the films will take place on Earth as well as the fictional world of Pandora. “Just like Dune takes place across worlds, the later Avatars take place across, certainly across two worlds, because some of it takes place on Earth as the story evolves.”

Cameron doesn’t reveal any further details, but the reveal that Earth will play a role in the coming sequels means that the Avatar universe can be expanded greatly. While Pandora, the lush, exotic world of the first film, will still be playing an important role, exploring Earth creates a host of new world-building opportunities and expansions to the existing lore. Avatar takes place in the mid-22nd century and, although audiences get to see some new human technology in the film and a few brief glimpses of Earth (mostly in the deleted scenes), what Earth and human civilization actually look like a hundred years in the future is left mostly up to the imagination.

Ultimately, Cameron has created a large sandbox within which to craft his Avatar sequels and explore Earth – the conflict that left Jake paralyzed, and the reasons for traveling to new solar systems can deepen audiences’ connections to the story. It’s not clear if these Earth sequences will be flashbacks, side stories, or if they will involve main characters like Jake and Neytiri actually being transported there, but the storytelling possibilities truly seem endless. Cameron created a vibrant and wildly alive world with Pandora and it will be interesting to see how his version of a futuristic Earth compares. Avatar 2 is scheduled to release on December 16th, 2022.
