Catherine Full Body May Not Actually Take Place On Earth

WARNING: The following contains SPOILERS for Catherine: Full Body, available now on the Nintendo Switch.

When Catherine was first released in 2011, it certainly got people talking, and not always for the right reasons. The fact that it was a part “social life simulator,” part devilishly difficult puzzle-game hybrid was one thing, but the game’s story is what really grabbed the attention of the masses. Catherine chronicles the misdeeds of Vincent Brooks in a beautifully told story full of lies, infidelity, and ancient Mesopotamian Gods. One night, Vincent drunkenly cheats on his long-term girlfriend, Katherine, with another woman named Catherine. Distraught, he falls down a morally grey path where he must decide whether to admit to his lurid affair and try to heal his relationship or to sack the whole thing off and live a life of debauchery.

It’s a somewhat unorthodox video game narrative, but that’s what Atlus does best. Catherine delivered the unique brand of gameplay Atlus is known for so well that the game ended up becoming a cult favorite in the West, with strong sales leading Atlus to release an extended version of the game in 2019, Catherine: Full Body. Full Body adds two additional endings, as well as a third love-interest in the form of Qathrine – or Rin for short. Rin’s inclusion not only adds further moral complexities to the game’s story but seemingly stretched the boundaries of its genre into bold new territory.

Rin is a shy, amnesiac pianist that swiftly befriends Vincent after they inauspiciously meet while he is fleeing from an assailant. Once their friendship begins to blossom, Vincent learns that Rin is, in fact, male and dresses as a woman due to their refusal to adhere to society’s expectations of what a man should be. By masquerading as a woman, Rin can feel genuinely comfortable within their own skin without fear of judgment from others. In true Atlus fashion, though, the plot thickens when Rin fully reveals themself to be an alien in human form who has a secret mission to carry out.

This did come as quite the surprise to many players, as it’s a fairly left-field twist, even for a title like Catherine. It does tie in with Vincent’s interest in space travel, though, something that was heavily mentioned in the original version of the game. He wishes to one day travel on a space shuttle, and, throughout the game, we see various posters for “Space Tourism,” which would imply that such a thing is viable in this game’s world and not merely a pipe-dream for him. Many players thought that this was just one of Vincent’s many quirks, but upon digging a little deeper, this has a greater significance than first thought.

What’s even stranger is that this was heavily alluded to in the original game, but only if players managed to get the “True Freedom” ending. At the tail-end of this outcome, Vincent is seen walking in a spaceport, which in turn reveals that the city that Vincent lives in is actually a large spaceship, along with many others flying past. There are numerous little hints throughout the game that this was the case, but it seems that many players didn’t quite pick up on them. Perhaps the most obvious – at least in hindsight – is that Vincent’s one-bath, one-bed apartment is depicted as being small and almost clinical in design. Almost like the kind that you’d see on a cruise ship or any other large scale transport vehicle.

This also helps to explain further why Vincent has such a keen interest in Space Tourism, as it implies that humanity has traveled to the furthest reaches of space and knows there’s more out there to be experienced. In a game that’s already full to the brim with oddities, this little revelation goes that little bit further into the sheer absurdity that Atlus love to revel in and helps to further cement Catherine as one of modern gaming’s strangest offerings.
