Dune: 10 Things From The Book Part 2 Has To Include

After the successful release of the 2021 film, what should fans expect to see in any sequel that takes inspiration from Frank Herbert’s Dune.

Since its release in October 2021, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, the latest adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel of the same name, has become a smash hit, being one of the highest-grossing films of 2021. However, this film is only the first part of Herbert’s classic.

Dune is massive in scope, and with Deadline reporting a sequel has already greenlit, it won’t be long before viewers are returned to the deserts of Arrakis. With the film’s massive cliffhanger, and the sheer depth of the work it’s based on, there are a number of things Dune’s sequel will need to tackle.

The Introduction Of The Bene Tleilax

In a single shot in Villeneuve’s Dune, viewers saw a strange, spider-like creature, obviously some sort of pet to the film’s antagonist, the Harkonnens. This odd being was never referenced or seen again, but it is indicative of a particularly interesting faction in Dune’s lore: the Bene Tleilax.

Known for their skills in genetic engineering and ethics and customs that were difficult to grasp for most others, the Bene Tleilax had a greater part to play further in the saga of Dune but were first mentioned in that first book. Seeing these strange scientists firsthand would both clarify a strange camera shot in the first film, and further the world-building of Dune that is shown to viewers.

Showing The History Of The Empire

Long before the events of Dune, fears of an AI uprising eventually led to all artificial intelligence being outlawed. This also led to technology being heavily limited and has massive ramifications in the time that Dune takes place. It is also why the spice melange is needed for faster than light travel to be possible, as it allows the human mind to predict dangers as quickly as artificial intelligence could. While the history is deep and complicated, so its fascinating implications would be a boon for the sequel to explore.

Expansion of the Mentats

Mentats are a particularly fascinating aspect of Dune’s lore, and they are not heavily explored in the 2021 film. As stated above, artificial intelligence was outlawed after a massive crusade against such technology. Mentats are the replacement for such ‘thinking machines’, and were often seen as political advisors.

Two such mentats were seen in the 2021 film, Thufir Hawat, assisting Duke Leto near the beginning of the film, and Piter de Vries. However, the mentats are incredibly important to the world of Dune, and further exploration of their role in the plot would be a great thing for the sequel to capitalize on.

Show More Of Chani

Chani, as played by Zendaya in the 2021 film, was seen heavily in marketing, and narrated the opening sequence of the film. While she is seen by the protagonist, Paul Atreides, throughout the film in visions, she is not physically present until the final act. Chani is incredibly important to the plot of Frank Herbert’s Dune, and what little viewers have seen of her so far has only furthered the mystery surrounding her.

Expanding her character would not only help viewers see more of her people – the Fremen – but also show why she is seemingly so important to Paul.

Show Sandworm Riding

Riding sandworms is both a deeply spiritual action for the Fremen, who worship the creatures, but also acts as an efficient (if perilous) form of transport for the desert-dwellers. Worm-riding, as it is colloquially known, is eventually performed by Paul in an incredibly important scene in the book.

Such a scene is important for the second film for several reasons. Not only would worm-riding be a fantastic further showcase of the film’s special effects, but it acts as a major transition for Paul as a character. By successfully riding a sandworm, Paul is able to further prove his worth to the Fremen.

Further Characterization Of Paul Atreides

As the protagonist of Dune, further fleshing out the character of Paul Atreides is incredibly important. In the film adaptation, Paul has already been shown to be immensely skilled, possessing pollical and martial skills, the telepathic abilities of the Bene Gesserit, and an innate understanding of Fremen culture. However, Paul’s personal journey, and his transformation into his Fremen identity, Muad’dib, are at the heart of Dune and its plot.

At the cliffhanger ending of the film adaptation, Paul is shown at the beginning of his transformation into the leader of the Fremen, which has been shown through vision sequences. However, showing the connection between those sequences and his current place in the plot will be pivotal for the sequel to cover.

More Scenes With Jessica

Lady Jessica, the mother of Paul Atreides, is an immensely important character who hasn’t had much time to shine in the film adaptation. Once a member of the Bene Gesserit, Jessica’s use of their mind-controlling ability, The Voice, has already been put on terrifying display. Unfortunately, as of this point, Jessica has often been overshadowed by other characters in the narrative, such as Paul and her husband, Duke Leto. In the latter half of the novel, however, Jessica has a compelling narrative arc of her own, parallel to Paul’s, which could be an incredibly interesting angle for Dune’s cinematic sequel to explore.

The Introduction Of Alia

Alia, Paul’s younger sister, is not yet born during the events of the 2021 adaptation of Dune. Shown as a young child in the novel, events that occurred before her birth infused Alia with the mind and mentality of an adult Bene Gesserit.

Alia is pivotal to the plot of Dune. Not only does she become an important character in her own right, but her actions continue to influence the Dune saga far past the events that the first installment covers. Fans of the book are sure to expect to see more of her in any future Dune films.

Expansion Of The Antagonists

House Harkonnen features many powerful Dune characters who are a threat throughout both the novel and its 2021 film adaptation. Wishing to possess the immense political power that Arrakis and its spice trade represent, they oppose House Atreides. The Harkonnens eventually use a traitor within the upper echelons of House Atreides to instigate a massive offensive against them. However, after a failed assassination at hands of Duke Leto, the leader of House Harkonnen showed his determination to crush Arrakis in the ending moments of the film. Not only will viewers want to see the conclusion to this rivalry, but House Harkonnen proved to be effective, intimidating villains who could easily be expanded upon in a sequel.

A New Tone

In an interview with Screen Rant, Dune’s director Denis Villeneuve spoke briefly on the sequel to the 2021 film. Villeneuve states, “The second movie, I think, will be an opportunity to have much more fun. In a way, it will be more cinematic. That’s what I can say.”

Possible future events seen in the first film certainly seem to hint at this, such as Paul leading an army into battle. Dune, as a whole, was a slower, methodical film, with fewer scenes based solely on action. With the possibility of a future film adapting a new tone, it is evident that the sequel to Dune will be able to explore new events and sequences that its predecessor could not.
