Friday The 13th Why Voorhees Is Spelled Wrong In Jason Goes To Hell

Friday the 13th’s Jason Goes to Hell is a controversial entry in the slasher series for many reasons that fumble fundamental aspects of the films, like Jason’s last name being spelled incorrectly.

There are many slasher icons that have frightened audiences over the years, but Friday the 13th’s Jason Voorhees remains one of the biggest characters in the horror genre. The consistent release of new Friday the 13th movies helped Jason acquire such a high body count and level of notoriety, and there have been many unique interpretations of Jason across the franchise.

Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday is the ninth entry in the series, and it takes an ambitious turn by killing off Jason early on and instead having his murderous essence hop bodies via a disturbing hell worm. Instead, intrepid bounty hunter, Creighton Duke (Steven Williams), becomes more of the film’s focus as he attempts to end Jason’s terror, once and for all. Jason Goes to Hell works hard to feel different than its predecessors, but this attitude also reflects a recklessness that hurts the movie in other small, but significant, ways.

Jason Goes to Hell features a powerful moment where, in the middle of Jason’s body-jumping antics, he returns to his childhood home. A shot of the home’s mailbox is incorrectly labeled “Vorhees,” which feels like an egregious error to make. It’s possible that the remaining members of the family changed their surname, in the mildest of ways, in an effort to distance themselves from the negative attention that likely came from Jason and Pamela Voorhees’ murders. The Voorhees family members have also never been shown to be especially smart, so it’s also possible they just misspelled their own name, but even that reasoning feels a little excessive. Jason Goes to Hell is such an atypical Friday the 13th sequel that some people even argue it’s not canon because of how much the movie changes.

Some non-canonical alternate universe where Jason’s last name is spelled “Vorhees” is technically possible, but highly unlikely since Jason Goes to Hell still pulls from the events of past movies and directly addresses the ending of the previous entry, Jason Takes Manhattan. It also doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to look at the movie through this lens, especially when the following crossover film, Freddy vs. Jason, references it. However, it’s a way to retroactively justify some of the other inconsistencies that Jason Goes to Hell introduces, like Jason’s half-sister Diana or the magic dagger that’s incorporated into his character’s history. The reality of the matter is that Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday is a wild sequel, but one that doesn’t view the canon of the Friday the 13th series or Jason Voorhees as very sacred.
