Chandler was always one of Friends’ funniest characters, but, while we love some of his underrated moments, we’re tired of his overrated ones.

Chandler was always known as the clown of the Friends group, with many iconic one-liners still being quoted long after the show’s final season. There are some moments when Chandler had us rolling on the floor laughing, such as telling Ross to “shut uuuuup” when helping him pivot the couch up the stairs.

Behind these hilarious moments, Chandler could also be the kind of man that anyone would be proud to call a friend. That being said, not all jokes land the first time for everyone, and some never land at all. Let’s take a look at five times Chandler Muriel Bing was an underrated friend, as well as five times when fans were right to be a bit skeptical.

10 Overrated: When He Lied To Janice About Yemen

Chandler’s constant on-again-off-again relationship with Janice brought many comedic moments to fans’ screens. But, when you look at it, Chandler’s treatment of Janice was less hilarious and more hurtful.

Of course, it’s understandable that Janice drove him crazy, but lying to Janice about moving country just to end their relationship seems a bit far. However, is it maybe kinder than breaking up with her for the 600th time?

9 Underrated: When He Dressed Up As Santa

In season seven’s tenth episode, “The One With The Holiday Armadillo,” Ross attempts to teach Ben about Hanukah and couldn’t find a Santa costume, so he resorted to buying the only thing he could find and fashioning a new festive persona, the Holiday Armadillo.

Chandler borrows a Santa costume from a friend at work and meets Ben as Santa, almost accidentally ruining Ross’s plan, but he stays and learns about Hanukah with Ben. How many people do you know that would track down a Santa suit for the sake of your son’s religious education without you asking them?

8 Overrated: Could This Joke BE Anymore Overrated?!

One of the jokes that the group constantly brings up about Chandler involves his emphasis on the word “be” in some of his phrases. However, there aren’t many moments that Chandler actually says this line throughout the show.

The joke may have been more effective if they were making fun of Chandler for a phrase that the audience knew he used often instead of one the audience is less familiar with.

7 Underrated: When He Gave Kathy ‘The Velveteen Rabbit”

Although Chandler’s involvement with Joey’s girlfriend Kathy did cause a great deal of tension between them, you can’t deny that Chandler’s birthday present was not thoughtful. Chandler got her an early edition of “The Velveteen Rabbit,” which was Kathy’s favorite book, by talking to book dealers and eventually tracking down the author’s grandchildren.

Not only that, but, when he learned that it might make Joey look bad, he spent an entire afternoon looking for a present that Joey could get her that was better than the book. The focus was on Chandler’s feelings for Kathy, but his efforts in finding the present should certainly not go unnoticed.

6 Overrated: When He Called Monica Fat

Fans will remember the flashback to Thanksgiving when Chandler spent the evening at the Geller house with Ross and his family, including Monica, who overhears Chandler calling her fat—and, no, he wasn’t making another sarcastic comment.

Even though Monica uses this as inspiration to lose weight, but she ends up marrying him, as fans will undoubtedly know. This is another example that was seen as “classic Chandler,” but, in reality, is an example of one of the many times Chandler has disrespected women.

5 Underrated: When He Had A Joey Room In His House

When Chandler and Monica move into their new house, Joey is understandably upset and tries to point out everything that is wrong with the house, including a mysterious humming noise that ends up being him.

Once Joey comes around to the idea of them moving home, Chandler reveals that there is a dedicated Joey room in their house and that they wouldn’t consider buying a house that didn’t have a room for his best friend.

4 Overrated: When He Told His Work Nina Was Mentally Unstable

In the first season’s sixteenth episode, “The One With Two Parts: Part 1,” Chandler is tasked with firing co-worker Nina, but, when he doesn’t have the heart to do so, he dates her, instead. When his boss asks him why Nina still turned up for work, Chandler says she’s mentally unstable and has no recollection of being fired.

This seems funny at first, but labeling Nina as crazy to everyone at work is a slightly overrated joke of Chandler’s that would certainly never fly today.

3 Underrated: When He Paid Joey’s Rent

When Chandler and Monica first move in together, one of Chandler’s main concerns is that Joey may not be able to financially survive without him there. Chandler resorts to offering to pay Joey’s rent for the first few months until he gets his money sorted.

There are not many people that would offer to pay your rent on top of their own out of the kindness of their heart. Thank you, Chandler.

2 Overrated: When He Had A Nubbin

One of the other running gags in the first half of the show is Chandler’s third nipple which he dubs as a “nubbin.” In season two’s fourth episode, “The One With Phoebe’s Husband,” Monica reveals Chandler’s third nipple to the group, and everyone but Joey is surprised.

The nubbin in mentioned a few times throughout the show, but it seems as though its nothing more than a randomly placed running gag for Chandler to have and serves no other purpose.

1 Underrated: When He Put All His Savings Into The Wedding

In season seven’s second episode, ‘The One With Rachel’s Book,” fans learn that Chandler has saved up a lot of money in the last few years, most likely for his entire future with Monica and their home and family. Fans never learn the amount, but it’s revealed that it’s exactly the budget of Monica’s dream wedding.

Initially, Chandler is hesitant to spend all of the money on the wedding, but he eventually realizes how important it is to Monica. Spending six year’s worth of saving money to make your wife happy for one day is no doubt one of the most selfless acts on the show.
