Gemma Chans Eternals Role Makes Up For Captain Marvels Mistake

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Marvel’s Eternals.

Marvel’s casting of Gemma Chan as Sersi in Eternals and the movie’s use of her character does the actor justice following her limited appearance as Minn-Erva in 2019’s Captain Marvel. In the past, Chan has gained recognition for her roles in Crazy Rich Asians, Let Them All Talk, and the TV series Humans. Following Eternals’ release, she will appear in Olivia Wilde’s psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling, which is due for release in 2022.

As Eternals’ de facto lead, Chan stands under a bigger spotlight than ever before in her career. Directed by Academy Award-winner ChloĆ© Zhao, this latest MCU installment revolves around an immortal race of beings, known as the Eternals, who arrive on Earth due to a cosmic event called the emergence. They help humans progress throughout history and are charged with protecting Earth from the evil Deviants in the present-day following the events of Avengers: Endgame. Eternals also features Chan’s Sersi involved in a love triangle between longtime partner Ikaris – played by Richard Madden – and Dane Whitman, a human (and the future Black Knight) portrayed by Kit Harington.

Chan’s second MCU role in Eternals is infinitely more engaging and far surpasses that of her first appearance. Minn-Erva’s short life span and lack of development in Captain Marvel have enabled Chan to seamlessly transition to a more important role within the MCU. Interestingly, Chan was one of the last Eternals to be cast due to conflict over her appearance as Minn-Erva. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige defended bringing back Chan as Sersi, highlighting her talent as an actor with an emphasis on casting the best performer for the role. Feige bolstered his position by recalling Captain America star Chris Evans’ appearance as the Human Torch in 2005’s Fantastic Four before taking on his trademark role of Steve Rogers.

Feige and Marvel were right to prioritize talent when casting Sersi, which in turn also redeems the studio’s error of underutilizing Chan in Captain Marvel. Despite the moderate controversy surrounding Chan playing Sersi, it really doesn’t matter she has now played two different Marvel characters. First of all, while Minn-Erva was a Kree member of the Star Force tasked with tracking down the defector Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), she was not a great villain. And in contrast, Sersi is prominent, complex, and has the kind of depth her Captain Marvel forebear sorely lacks.

Chan’s re-addition to the MCU benefits the actor, as well as Marvel in the long run, and her performance is one of the standout elements of an otherwise stodgy fare served up by Eternals. Undeterred, Marvel is already developing Eternals 2, as shown by the film’s post-credits “will return” banner, therefore inviting a promising future for Chan’s compelling Sersi portrayal. Chan’s appearance in Eternals has undoubtedly made her, alongside the likes of Black Widow’s Florence Pugh and Shang-Chi’s Simu Liu, one of Marvel’s brightest emerging stars in the MCU Phase 4 to date.
