The Japanese Power Rangers Just Joined Marvels Universe

The ever-growing storylines of Marvel Comics’ Avengers has grown even more as the team just made the Japanese Power Rangers canon within the Marvel Universe. The Avengers have found themselves facing a challenge they never have before after the Red Skull takes away all of their powers using pieces of the Infinity Stones. Now, the Avengers are using Stark Tech suits to once again achieve the level of power they lost, sparking the excitement of their latest series, a series that has made the Japanese Power Rangers Marvel canon.

In Avengers: Tech-On Avengers #4 by Jim Zub and Jeffrey “Chamba” Cruz, the Avengers are coming off of a recent win against a tech-powered Loki who was attacking Hiroshima, Japan. After Loki was vanquished, a threat that was launched by the villainous Red Skull, a legion of Ultron bots were next up for the Avengers to defeat. Before Ultron attacked, however, the heroes were relishing their win in Japan where the Hikonin Sentai Akibarangers were introduced for the first time in Marvel canon.

Keen-eyed fans were able to catch the cameo made by the Rangers on the very first page of the issue on which Captain Marvel is depicted having a conversation with Steve Rogers while walking down the street. Little did the Avengers know, they walked right past the three members of the Akibarangers as well as a long-time ally of the team talking seemingly amid some shopping. AkibaRed, AkibaYellow, and AkibaBlue AKA Nobuo Akagi, Yumeria Moegi, and Mitsuki Aoyagi were spotted standing in the street speaking with their friend Sayaka Honiden with Akagi holding a shopping bag. While the comic doesn’t explicitly say it is the Japanese Power Rangers, it is clear to fans of the series based on their unique appearances. Akagi is wearing his classic red jacket, with Moegi in her yellow cat cosplay, and Aoyagi in her straight forward professional attire. Their ally, Honiden, is identifiable by her appearance as well with her white coat and black hair.

Hikonin Sentai Akibarangers translates in English to Unofficial Squadron Akibarangers which is fitting as the series is an unofficial installment of the Super Sentai series. Appearing as a live-action television show, the series began airing on April 6, 2012 and lasted for two seasons. The series follows this version of the Power Rangers as they have to fight an evil and mysterious force that is working to take over the Earth. The Akibarangers’ secret base was a Sentai Cafe which is a Super Sentai version of the popular maid cafes in Japan, a cafe that the team may have been standing outside of in their Avengers appearance.

The only discrepancy in this analysis is the identity of AkibaRed, who is here being identified as the original Nobuo Akagi even though the character was later replaced by Takuma Tsuzuki. The only reason AkibaRed is identified as the original is that the team is seemingly talking to Sayaka Honiden who has romantic ties to Akagi, so it is more than likely that is the version of the Power Ranger depicted. Because of this blink-and-miss-it cameo in one of the latest Avengers comic books, the Japanese Power Rangers is now canon in Marvel Comics.
