The Naruto fandom has had a multitude of different media under its belt, including manga, anime, movies, and video games. It is not every day that a fan work gets turned into an adapted piece of media, so when Naruto fans heard that a piece of fan fiction was being turned into an audio piece by a professional company, interests were peaked.
In 2010, the fan fiction piece Yours For An Hour was announced as the basis for a new audio drama CD. Originally written as a Naruto and Sasuke, or NaruSasu, love story, it was adapted into audio and released in stores in Japan and America. Here are ten things you Naruto fans might not know about it, including its existence.
10 Fanfic
Yours For An Hour started its life as a fan fiction piece written by Hic iacet Mori and published on FanFiction.net. The original version follows the story of Naruto and Sasuke as they fall in love in typical fan fiction fashion. It was written and published in February 2010.
It is rare for a piece of fan fiction to become a piece of actual media for mass consumption outside of sites like FanFiction.net and Ao3. Another piece of work that began its life as fan fiction is the 50 Shades of Grey series which also launched around the same time. This is notable because Yours For An Hour is often related to the 50 Shades series due to similar overarching stories.
9 Fan Art
Much like the fan fiction community, the fan art community consists of many talented people who share their works with likeminded fans. One of the most notable NaruSasu (often shortened to SNS) fan artists is KIRA. Not much is known about KIRA themselves except that they are a Hong Kong native and read Chinese and English.
They are highlighted here because they were specifically chosen to do the art for Yours For An Hour. KIRA is incredibly popular for their works in the SNS community, so they took several pieces they had done of the actual characters and adapted them for the release of the audio drama cd.
8 Not Naruto
The title of this article including Naruto is based solely on its origins as a piece of fan fiction. This is because Yours For An Hour is technically unrelated to Naruto, Sasuke, and Masashi Kishimoto, due to the way licensing works. While the original fan fiction contains references to the series and the titular Naruto and Sasuke, these have been completely wiped from the script of the cd.
Instead, the CD follows two new characters that bear incredibly familiar appearances to the licensed characters. Due to the work itself being original and owned by its creator, Hic iacet Mori, the audio CD doesn’t break any copyright laws with the changing, and redevelopment, of the characters.
7 Drama CD
For American audiences, an audio drama CD might not sound like a real thing, but that is because they don’t typically make it across the ocean for purchase, nor translation. It is not unusual for there to be dozens of CDs made for any given series, however, Yours For An Hour is directly tied to the English fan fiction of the same name, which is extremely uncommon.
For further detail, there has been a debate about the labeling of CDs like Yours For An Hour because it can be classified as a BLCD or Boy Love CD. The original author stated that it wasn’t, though the definitions have changed since 2010. Back then something titled BL was also identified as heavily sexual. Now the term can be used for CDs with or without sexual intent.
6 Haru Hinomoto
Naruto Uzumaki is well known for being a superpowered orphan who makes every part of his life both positive and love-filled. Turning that optimism into a new character for the CD was no simple task. The character Haru Hinomoto was created to fill in for Naruto.
The two are very similar in many ways, both being optimistic orphans, blonde-haired, and have the same face except for Haru lacking the whisker marks on his face. The biggest difference is that Naruto goes on to be the Hokage, which is essentially politics, but Haru is a handyman since the CD is set in a modern, realistic world.
5 Aki Tsukikage
Sasuke Uchiha and his counterpart Aki Tsukikage are also very similar. They are both portrayed as cold and mysterious but dig deep enough you can find love in there, at least that’s what Boruto has said about Sasuke. Unlike Sasuke, Aki hasn’t tried to murder everyone in cold blood, but he is a businessman, so he’s probably done some bad.
Unlike Naruto, this CD also focuses on Aki and his circle of coworkers and acquaintances, making him the main character. Aki’s hair and look is reminiscent of an average 20 something with medium length hair that is rounded on top, almost as if you cut off all of the spikes from Sasuke’s hair in Naruto: Shippuden.
4 Voices
Being an audio drama, the voice acting is one of the most important parts of the CD, as the cast can make or break the entire thing. Fans are lucky to have received a special gift in the form of a super talented voice cast.
Junko Takeuchi and Noriaki Sugiyama voice Haru and Aki respectively. These names might look familiar to Naruto fans because they are the actual voice actors of Naruto and Sasuke. This is one piece of information that confused fans into thinking the CD was part of the Naruto cannon when it was announced, though it gave legitimacy to the project.
3 Extra CDs
Much like any television show or movie, there are plenty of scenes and recordings that get cut from the major story in audio dramas. Additionally, there are also recordings that are made with the sole purpose of entertaining the audience outside of the main content. Depending on the version of Yours For An Hour fans purchased, there were two alternate extras added to the CDs.
One has the Amusement Park date scene between Haru and Aki and the other has a free chat between the cast. The amusement park date is fully scripted and is a sweet moment that didn’t add plot elements, rather it was essentially a filler scene. The free chat included several conversations in both English and Japanese as Junko Takeuchi and Daisuke Namikawa talk about random things, though Noriaki Sugiyama gives a foreword filled with quality content.
2 Positive Queer Content
One of the things that the Naruto series, and plenty of other anime as well, lack are good portrayals of queer-identifying characters. Some anime have good portrayals, like undubbed Sailor Moon, and others have poor portrayals, like One Punch Man. The lack of quality queer characters has caused fans to change the cannon into something better.
Yours For An Hour is just one example of fans taking the male characters in an anime and shipping them with each other. When a story is focused on giving air time to certain characters and focusing on their relationship, like how Naruto only thought of Sasuke for literal years in cannon, it’s not surprising that those bonding feelings can translate so easily into a strong ship like NaruSasu. Even without the large history of well-developed characters, Haru and Aki are at least an attempt at giving representation where there is none.
1 The Story
The story of Yours For An Hour takes place in a modernized, realistic setting where Haru and Aki begin to enjoy each other’s company. The premise and title are based on the line, “I’ll make your world better in just one hour.” Aki receives a business card which has Haru’s information on it, and after meeting, continues to hire him for small jobs.
As they get closer, the pair share secrets. Aki learns that Haru spent time in an orphanage (detention center in the fanfic) and later, when it burns down, Aki donates the equivalent of one million dollars towards a rebuild. By the end, the two end up together ending a sweet love story.
